Letter to my Birth Son by patcelaw True Story Contest contest entry |
Dear Birth Son, As your birth mother I would like to introduce myself. My name is now Patricia Celeste Lawrence. I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico with my husband of almost 34 years. I am 54 years old and my husband is 67. We have three grown daughters who would be your half sisters. We have three grandchildren, two granddaughters and a grandson. We will have another grandchild in January 1993. In 1957 when I found I was pregnant with you, I was forced to make some very difficult decisions. My mother and two sisters tried to get me to have an abortion. I could not have an abortion. Because of my family’s reaction to my pregnancy, the only clear option I had was to choose adoption. This was not easy for me as I struggled long hours about the decision I had to make. When you were born I was not allowed to see you for over 48 hours. I can still close my eyes and see your precious little body in the nursery basket. Over the years I have prayed many times for you and your parents. To me the parents you have are the most special people in the world, because they gave to you the love I was not able to. At the age of 19 (as I was) I was afraid if I had kept you and raised you myself I may have mistreated you because you had been conceived during an acquaintance rape. I am glad I made the decision I did, because it allowed me the freedom to move from a small town in Missouri to California where I met my husband. When I discovered in 1981 that I was manic depressive (bipolar), I began to have a need in my heart to locate you to make you aware of the heredity disorder. I am not the only one in my family to suffer from this disorder. Should you ever have times when you experience wide mood swings, you might look at the disorder as an answer. I function very well with 3 doses of lithium daily. This is something which was not known when you were born so was not in the medical history. Also, there is quite a lot of heart disease in my family. It is my hope that should you read this letter you would want to see and talk with me at least once. I have nothing to hide as my husband and children are aware of all these things. I also would like to talk with your parents and personally thank them for doing a job that I was unable to do. May our God bless you and your family in the most special way. With heartfelt love, Patricia (your birth mother).
