Dear Birth Son,

As your birth mother I would like to introduce myself. My name is now Patricia Celeste Lawrence. I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico with my husband of almost 34 years. I am 54 years old and my husband is 67. We have three grown daughters who would be your half sisters. We have three grandchildren, two granddaughters and a grandson. We will have another grandchild in January 1993.

In 1957 when I found I was pregnant with you, I was forced to make some very difficult decisions. My mother and two sisters tried to get me to have an abortion. I could not have an abortion. Because of my family’s reaction to my pregnancy, the only clear option I had was to choose adoption. This was not easy for me as I struggled long hours about the decision I had to make. When you were born I was not allowed to see you for over 48 hours. I can still close my eyes and see your precious little body in the nursery basket.

Over the years I have prayed many times for you and your parents. To me the parents you have are the most special people in the world, because they gave to you the love I was not able to. At the age of 19 (as I was) I was afraid if I had kept you and raised you myself I may have  mistreated you because you had been conceived during an acquaintance rape.

I am glad I made the decision I did, because it allowed me the freedom to move from a small town in Missouri to California where I met my husband.

When I discovered in 1981 that I was manic depressive (bipolar), I began to have a need in my heart to locate you to make you aware of the heredity disorder. I am not the only one in my family to suffer from this disorder. Should you ever have times when you experience wide mood swings,  you might look at the disorder as an answer. I function very well with 3 doses of lithium daily. This is something which was not known when you were born so was not in the medical history. Also, there is quite a lot of heart disease in my family.

It is my hope that should you read this letter you would want to see and talk with me at least once. I have nothing to hide as my husband and children are aware of all these things.

I also would like to talk with your parents and personally thank them for doing a job that I was unable to do.

May our God bless you and your family in the most special way.

With heartfelt love,

Patricia

(your birth mother).

Author Notes
I wrote the story as a letter to my birth son in 1992 less than a year before I was able to locate him. I sent the letter to who I thought might be able to give him the letter but I do not.know that it ever reached him. In my unpacking of things this last week my daughter found this letter and I thought it would be
one that would be good to put on Fan story I hope you enjoy it.
For my readers who may not know I did locate that son less than a year after I had written this letter. He never expressed to me that he had received a letter so I am pretty sure he didnā??t. He and I have a good relationship as a matter fact I talked to him just less than a week ago. His health is not the greatest he has heart disease and he also has Parkinsonā??s disease he is only 66 years old and he feels like that he does not have much longer to live. I am so glad that I was able to locate him and that he is aware. I also got to know his adoptive mother and we had a good relation ship for the most part the first couple of years was a little touchy but she finally came around and she realized that I was not going to do anything to take away the love he had for her. As a matter fact I told him that if he ever took away his love from his adoptive mother that I would get on a chair and kick him in the of the pants. His adoptive mother passed away about Eight or nine years ago.
Patricia
