Invitation For Christmas Eve by Brenda Strauser

A week before Christmas, Amber received a mysterious letter with the following words:

"You are invited to a Christmas Eve party at my cabin at 7:00 p.m.  A map with directions is included."

Amber felt a pit in her stomach. She felt uneasy about the letter because it was not signed. Amber was so hesitant to attend the party, but curiosity got the best of her so she decided to go.  Just to be safe, Amber told her sister where she would be.

It was Christmas Eve so Amber  prepared for her trip, She studied the map then drove to her destination, which was only 15 minutes away.  Amber, with her large flashlight,  cautiously walked through the frigid winter forest.

It was quiet, nothing stirring, then suddenly, a limb creaked, cracked then collapsed. All.of a sudden she heard  a loud howl from an unknown animal  Amber was scared to death; Just the uncertainty of the situation was nerve-wracking.

Fluttery snowflakes puffed down on her as she gained her composure. She ventured further into the foreboding woods. Her oversized boots crunched through the powdered snow, which glittered like angel fire.  Suddenly, a shrill sound from an owl startled her.

She started second guessing her decision. Amber didn't know who wrote the letter. Maybe, she should turn around and go back. Then finally, she spied a worn down building which resembled a cabin. Chills ran down her spine. Her imagination was getting the best of her. As she grew closer to the cabin, her hands started to shake.

Amber knocked on the door and she was surprised to see a familiar face open the door. Her eyes lit up when she saw her 3 best friends from college standing at an enormous Christmas tree, which flashed and flickered with its dazzling lights. A beautiful angel was perched on the top.

She was so relieved it was her friends who had sent the letter and not some stalker. Her friends wanted to surprise her so they didn't sign their names on the letter.

The aroma of turkey and other delicious foods filled the cabin. As she sat with her friends by the fireplace, they stared into the rainbow- orange flames. The radiant light of the fire warmed her up.

Amber played Christmas melodies on the piano while her friends sang. They enjoyed the feast and shared past memories until midnight. This was one of the best Christmas memories of her life.
