"Mommy, where's Daddy?" I ask from my bed.

"Matt, like I tell you every night, Daddy went somewhere for a little while, but he'll be back soon," she said. Mommy had her back to me as she folded my clothes. I heard her sniffle and wipe her eye with the sleeve of her sweatshirt. Mommy always wore Daddy's sweatshirts at night when it was just me and her in the house.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, my handsome young man?" She turned around and sat on the bed next to me. Her eyes were red, and as she brushed the hair from my forehead, she bent forward to kiss that spot.

"Is Daddy coming home tomorrow? It's my birthday."

"No Matt. Daddy can't come home. He's very busy."

"He's still busy at that hotel?"

"Yes. Yes he is."

"I miss Daddy. Do you miss Daddy too?"

"Of course I do, you silly goose." Mommy tickled me and made me squirm. "I love your Daddy." She smiled at me. My mommy is very pretty.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, dear?" I think she knew my next question. She always knew.

"Is Daddy a bad man?"

"No, no, Matthew," she said to me. "Daddy is not a bad man. He is a good person, and you remember that."

"The kids at school say he's bad and that makes me mad! I'm gonna punch Tommy in his stomach if he doesn't stop!"

"Matthew J. Bryersmith, you will do no such thing." She picked me up and hugged me. "No fighting, you hear me young man?"

I started to cry on her shoulder, right onto Daddy's sweatshirt. She held me close and we just swayed back and forth. We both cried. Then I wrapped my arms around her neck ...

Six-hundred miles away, Daddy lay in his prison bunk. A single tear rolled down his cheek.
