Watching an old lady
The Porch Lady

Sitting on her porch all day
smiling at children no longer there
Childish voices still call out
then vanish in the air
She sees her late husband
as he's napping in his chair
She drapes a knitted blanket round
just because she cares
The tree they planted years ago
still rustles in the breeze
She cannot see the dead one
killed in winter's freeze
Still smells the family dinners
she cooked most every night
wipes hand prints off of colored walls
that are now just painted white
Her neighbors are concerned
they worry and they fret
it isn't safe for her alone
a nursing home, her best bet
She hears the talk and ignores the stares
To her life's still worthwhile
Her memories keep her company
and she greets each with a smile.

Author Notes
I was that woman this morning. Sitting on the porch all by myself and remembering the past. Hope you enjoy and please give me feedback.
