GW,
I doubt that the feeling that one should have done something will never go away. The piece is a well written reminder that often we have but one opportunity to act, and then, never again. I have awakened so many times in my life wanting to say something to someone that I should have said, wanted to say, meant to say, but was careless with the opportunity, so I said nothing. The words would have been important at the time to that person and to me, but now they lie dead within my brain. There is no escape for me or for the words unspoken. So go all of us with dead words, thoughts, acts and ambitions.

Those feeling rear up at different times. I can't change what's done but I can change how I approach every other situation I am faced with. Thanks for the great review.

Wow! That is so true, we do think about the maybes and the what if's. I had a cousin who was suicidal and I was talking to him, and begging him not to do it quoting the Bible all I knew how and then after he did it I was just like you maybe I should of said this or maybe I should of said that. I was beating myself up pretty bad wondering what could I've said different that would've change his mind. Thank you so much for sharing this with the site. God Bless you!

Thank you very much. The sad thing is that the person you want to help has to want to listen to what you say. If they have made up their mind nothing can change it. Thanks for the review.

You are so right, but the family took it hard and still taking it pretty hard, his grandma and sisters and his aunt and others. And now he joins his mom in death she died kinda young with breast cancer 32 years of age. Anyway thanks for your comments, and you're welcome for yours! God Bless you...!

It's hard to stand by and watch someone take the wrong path, but ultimately it is their own choice and something they have to own, not you. Thank you for sharing this with us. Happy writing.

Compelling use of repetition and listing in these what ifs
You convey in a powerful way your message that sometimes it is far better to make a friend annoyed with us temporarily rather than allow that friend to destroy her life
Tragically, this scene has played out far too many times in our society

This really resonated with me - I have a couple of dear relatives who are trapped by alcohol but nowhere near admitting it. The form you chose to convey the story is very telling and the repetition of "Maybe I should ..." hammers home the remorse that seems to still linger. Don't let "should" enter into the equation - no matter what you did or didn't do, you can't order someone else's life for them. I am so sorry for your pain. Blessings to you, Cherri.

I've just read a poem entitled, What If so it was a coincidence that your story came next. I think we can all look back on events and have regrets about our own actions. This poem highlighted an ordinary everyday situation where action may truly have been a matter of life or death. Thought provoking.

Excellent piece of writing. Our lives are full of "Maybe" or "If" or others. I hear your plea for your friend. It is sad to know the road she is choosing to go down. Her new friend of alcohol will blind her more and more as she continues. As you say losing her to alcohol is the worst especially when she is your sister. Sometimes our words are not enough to make someone change their habits. Your poem has a good message. Thanks for sharing it.

Hey there Gw
There are a lot of what ifs in my personal life. I have been in this situation where I lost my wife of 21 years to beer & wine over church, family and a marriage. I have asked myself what if for the last time

Life is full of maybe. A person has to help him or her self, you can only do so much. Second guessing will never help.Great story, interesting topic.

This is a very sad write my friend I really understand believe me I do I used to drink it was hard to stop. I noticed a lot of maybes in this work but let me tell you my friend for a person to give up drinking they have to admit themselves they have a problem first you couldn't have done anymore regards Jill

Thank you, it helps the guilt to know this, but the pain is still very deep. Thank you for the review.
