I find it difficult to imagine what young men must experience as soldiers and what there thoughts must be like. You have delved very successfully, in this poem, into the mind of a young soldier and truly portrayed a mirror of what he must feel. It is so sad that so many have sacrificed their youth and in some cases, their love of life. This poem is well done and very informative.

A story in verse, well-told, with excellent verisimilitude, a virtual tour de force in rhyming.
Good luck in the War Poetry contest, Cat!
(Close the brackets in the second stanza, after "war.")

This poem is very well-written. I'm sure the many times soldiers fought or went to battle it was very depressing for them. I can imagine that when they arrived home, the minds were sorrowful, too, even though they were glad to be home. I enjoyed your poem.

I don't have a six to award you for this but it certainly deserves one because your poem has really moved me. You took me into the heart and mind of a real young man and his honest fears. I am grateful for the great sacrifices of lives and youth for these brave men.

Your poem is very well-written and moving--freely expressing the thoughts that must occupy the minds of so many soldiers and former soldiers--the haunting survivors' guilt, the reluctance to be called a hero, . . . .

I wish I had six stars for this one - it's magnificent - and tells (I believe) more the truth of what soldiers faced, what they cannot forget. It's hard to "wrap your mind around" for sure.
Excellent and sad

Comment from Sandra du Plessis
A very well-written thought-provoking and a heartfelt poem about war and the soldiers that have to experience all the horrors of war and the loss of friends fighting along us will never leave our minds. No one really wins anything in a war.

This is an excellent War poem which well meets the contest requirements and the picture you chose fits it perfectly. You describe the horrors of war and the torment that soldiers bring home with them long after the fighting is over. Thanks for sharing.

A poignant write and war can destroy a young mind, just like frost can kill a rose, memories that will not go away, these young men are never the same again, good luck with the contest, love Dolly x
