I always tear up when I see these guys in the chill weather continuing to serve. For their friends and soldiers that did not make it back.

Yes indeed - we are so caught up with our own daily reality that we scarcely have time to think - well portrayed here against the backdrop of the veterans' remembrance day - definitely voting for this one !

Has it begun snowing on your log cabin yet. Only a dusting so far. I'm from Rutland, VT & currently living down south near Brattleboro. What areas are you in? My friend in Mt Holly near Ludlow is supposed to get about 4 inches. She lives in a snow belt. Now to your poem
This is a lovely tribute to all those who gave, gave and lost their lives and those who still serve. Your metaphors and mention of symbolism are strong. The juxtaposition will definitely draw the reader's attention and raise an eyebrow at the irony you point out. Well thought out. I am voting for this one.

Thanks for the review. I have closed up my cabin for the winter but I just live 20 minutes away in Quebec. I opened up my view this summer, then that windstorm took down a few more trees, big ones! I look forward to the spring and my new projects. I sanded my maple floor this summer and next summer I will put on a new tin roof, red like my door. Cheers.

My role model is Susan Atkins from Life Below Zero. If you haven't watched her, you can catch some clips on you tube. She inspires me with one of her phrases. "Nobody's going to do it if I don't. So I've got to put my big girl panties on and ger out there and do it." That's helps me if I'm hesitant to go out & bring in the pellet bags.

The plight of too many veterans is disheartening. A lot of people don't understand the sacrifices required by the men and women putting their lives on the line in loyalty to one's home country. Your poem contains a lot of sensitivity and I'm so glad you've shared this message. :-)

Thanks for the compassionate review. When I see the old soldiers selling the poppies in November, I realize that they are still in service, for their friends and soldiers that did not make it back.

What a touching and moving poetic offering that surely speaks of today's tendency for many individuals to "not see" - always rushing...on their damn phones...and yet a small child takes the time to honor the veteran by saluting...

Yes. Those veterans with the poppies always bring a tear to my eye. Such a sacrifice they have made and continue on for their lost friends and fellow soldiers that did not make it back. Thanks for the review. Wishing you a lucky week end!

Thank you it is hunting season this weekend so I get to witness the deer out smarting my son once again. It has been six years since he shot one.

I love this one. In general, I'm always drawn to the idea that everyone has a story - that people we pass on the street have rich internal lives that we know nothing about because they are just minor characters in our story. The veteran is an extreme example of this - they've have seen things we'll never see and made sacrifices we'll never make - all of that invisible to us as we pass them at Starbucks. You've articulated that idea so beautifully and poignantly here - wish I had a six left.

I did experience this scene and it was so poignant, I knew there was a poem there, cheers.
