Oh so true, me too! Strange that books have that particular smell; I have vivid memories of visiting libraries as a child. My only negative is that this doesn't read like a poem to me. ( Almost like the intro better, that says it all ).

Thanks for the read and comment. Please know that this is a Free verse poem. Free verse poems have no regular meter or rhythm. They do not follow a proper rhyme scheme; these poems do not have any set rules.

Feel bad now! Thank you for pointing that out.

You are welcome. Stay safe.

This poem definitely will draw the reader in if they are readers. I remember the smell of the library. It does have a certain smell. I love the smell of books. I remember as a child opening my new paper back when we got our Scholastic books order. This was a fun poem. Thank you.

I often wonder how poets come up with their poetry. This contest is an eye opener. I see that the brain power of a poet is quite amazing. Well done!

My Grandma adored the library and spent much of her retired days in them, they were her sanctuary as she took journeys into the unknown and came out having been on many adventures. I hope they never close, love Dolly x

I could not agree with you more. Thank you for your read and review. Fortunately, libraries are keeping up with technology. However, I fear that in the future books themselves will become extinct.

Yes, perfect twenty-five syllables, and I cannot agree with the theme more. I hope they never go away too, and they shouldn't. In the end they are a perfect backup for those storage devices that depend on power and other mechanics to record and play.

I so agree with this tribute to the libraries! Since I was a little girl and just learned to read, my parents inscribed me as the youngest member ever of the public library in our little village. I read, and read and read all the books they had there until, at 18, I went to Amsterdam, to take a job and be independent. Of course, one of the first things I did was to become a member of the fabulous Library of Amsterdam. A real haven, as you so aptly describe in your poem.
Now I live in Mallorca, Spain. Paying regular visits to the...Library, of course.

I have heard that before, that books smell. Usually it is a musty smell, kind of a dusty smell? I have spent a lot of time in libraries, but my nose must be immune to any smell. Haven't been to the library for a long time, son't like climbing the stairs. I'm old.:)

Notice how much 'emptier' they were even before this chaos started.... I'm thinking, though, that they'll never go away since they are a product/item of the government (lol!), but I have noticed in the bigger cities and such their mission is more and more digital.... :/ :/ Thanx for sharing this unique offering - best of luck! ;)

Your picture plus 25 syllables created a great contest entry, Mystery Writer. I enjoyed reading this. Your words flow well with a great message. You are right--there is something special about holding a 'real' book in one's hand.
Thanks for sharing. Best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan
