I've lived my life mostly for my family. Now in my twilight years I am trying to find some time for my own quests. No regrets, it was in loving my children that I found happiness and meaning in life. But I would like to share some of the learning with others now. :-)

Gary,
I like this poem very much. But first, I'd also like to say that you have an awesome array of older photographs and I am really blessed to see those accompanying your work. They add this personal humanity to your poetry. It makes it all the more real.
I love your description of the progression through how you became able to be your own friend and learn that you were able to live, "a life that was of my own choice." There are many who can't say that no matter what age they are in. There are also those younger folks who believe they are living that life, and the ones that happen to survive eventually do realize they were wrong.
Your ideal of, "intimate wealth," found through having friends is one I completely agree with. My favorite line, hands down, is, "And to be able to say, I am my best friend." A person who can reach for that and achieve it in all truthfulness with themselves are probably far happier than the rest.
Great work. I am growing fonder and fonder of your work!

Perhaps the greatest success is living a life of one's own choosing. At the end, we have to live with the choices we make. This is a very well written and thought-provoking poem.

deepwater,
What a beautifully written poem you've penned. I love your philosophy to follow your dreams and not hold back. If we take a chance then we enhance our lives. Your writing in this is deep and very thought pondering. Cool art work and color presentation sets off this exquisitely written poem. I enjoyed the lines:
As I look down the farthest side of my life with age,
Fulfilled and understanding in all, and truly content
to have lived a life that was of my own choice
Sage advice in poetic form. Once again it's a pleasure to read your writing. Keep up the stellar writing. . .Melissa!

You share with us what you have learned from the experience in your life, your own "I did it my way". Your justifiable pride in yourself and your accomplishments is wonderful, but I wonder at your contented gaze at a solitary future, or so it seems since you mention no partner. The writing is beautiful and clear, and reads very smoothly.

I'm truly impressed by your message, to leave the comforts of our own perception and persue our dreams. It's so easy to stay within the comfort zones, but as you say, true contentment will come from taking those risks.

How beautiful. How wonderful to look back onto your life and feel peace and contentment, with no regrets. Very well written, with perfect flow. I truly enjoyed reading this, and envy one who looks back in this contentment! I see a man who has had love, goals and dreams, and has achieved them. Go in peace brother. Betty

I loved the message that you expressed in this poem. It is very important to love oneself and be at peace with oneself - that's the only way you can give love to others.

Every time I read one of your poems, I feel like I am reading some grand bit of wisdom, especially in this one. It makes me think of the fact that life is full of the unknown and they are chances that we must take. And while we are young we surround ourselves with many of what we think is just life's gratuities until we love ourselves just as we are in the end. At least that is what I get from this myself. It's really splendid.
