I stay on a small holding and the owls have hunted several of our small chickens. Sometimes I hear their call at night and just hope the chickens are well hidden. Thanks for sharing this well written poem.

Many thanks for taking the time to read my poem and comment. Keeping chickens is a hazardous occupation. If it isn't foxes burrowing through the wire, it's birds swooping down from above. At what peril comes our breakfast egg!

Barn owls are amongst the most beautiful of birds. We sometimes see them here, but not often. The smaller Boobook (named because of its rather mournful call) is much more common. They are, as you say, beautiful to watch as I think all owls are.

Although I am not acquainted with this verse form you have succeeded in writing a very enjoyable poem, with lovely imagery and rhymes. It reads very well and shows much potential.

Thanks Nosha. I only came across the form recently through the work of the other poets on this website mentioned in my author note. It is quite a demanding form! So glad that you enjoyed the poem. Thanks again!

That is a great photograph. Those eyes are so expressive. And this Pantoum came out nicely. Good visual imagery. I didn't even realize there were repeat lines. Smooth transitions. Good rhymes. Excellent work.

The Boobook owl, what an interesting name. It's certainly appropriate for the Halloween season, wouldn't you agree? Boo-book, LOL...
I devour this type of poetry, Tony, and each delicious morsel you've provided for us here in this exceptional pantoum only makes me hungry for more. It's such a captivating format, one not easily pulled off, I would think.
However, pull it off, you did, my friend...in spades!
Wonderful work!

Thanks for your fulsome praise, Dean! I feel very much flattered! The name is a most accurate onomatopoeia for the sound they make! It is delivered in a soft and melancholy tone and is quite haunting on a still and moonlit night!

What a superb pantoum! You get the subtly shifts of meaning in the repeated lines, and you do a masterly job of depicting the quiet menace of this beautiful bird.

Many thanks, Rondeno. I must say, I did find this one quite a challenge! I think I have developed a bald patch where I was scratching my head trying to find ways to make it work! Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a very menacing picture! Plenty for other owls, but not the Boobook!

You have perfectly captured the exact nature of the owl with this piece. I owned a pair of barn owls (long story, a rescue). The way they hunted and silently stalked their prey never ceased to fascinate me. It was quite some time before they accepted my presence enough to reveal their hunting techniques. "her talons piercing death's small cry" is precisely what I was privileged to watch first hand. As with any piece that follows a strict format the fact that I didn't notice it speaks to the perfection of its use. I had to go back and check the form as it didn't occur to me reading it that it was following anything other than great writing. An excellent piece. Most enjoyable. mike

Thanks so much for this review, Mike. I struggled for quite some time to adapt to the strict criteria of the pantoum form. I found it more difficult than I had expected to keep the same lines but shift the meaning! Great to hear that it worked for you and, equally important perhaps, for the owls!
