Rod, as a long-time English teacher and poet, I know you are familiar with the poem of the same title by Thomas Moore. I do love his poem. Your sonnet does a nice job of reminding us to stop and see and smell the roses. Terry.

Hi, Terry. I must confess I had never read Moore?s poem until today. Wow! The similarities between his and mine astound me. Many thanks for sharing MY sonnet and turning me on to Moore. Rod

The narrator celebrates the beauty of a rose but laments its brief life span. Good metaphor with queen and reign. Finally he advises the reader to slow down and enjoy that beauty which is brief. Reminds me of

nice ode to the Rose like these lines the best
But you have filled the yard with pomp and grace,
A stately queen despite your too-short reign.
Your sweet bouquet, though now there's little trace,
Had wafted boldly through this rare domain.
Since Beauty blossoms swiftly, swiftly dies,
Let us reduce our pace and use our eyes.

This is a well written sonnet with good rhyming and a lovely constant rhythm throughout. It reads well and the photo is great too. I would however, change your last but one line slightly as the repeat of two 'swiftly''s directly after each other doesn't quite work for me. I would have said something like 'since that which swiftly blossoms swiftly dies.'

Just love it - a Sonnet to the proverbial 'Last Rose of Summer', telling of the sheer joy of having a rose in our garden and the sensory delights it brings to us - a real treat! enhanced by a personal pic.

As much as I hate summer and love fall and winter, this is a sad poem as I love the beautiful flowers that come with the season.
A lovely way to use the rose to say goodbye to summer. I really like the last line, which is a poetic form of "stop and smell the roses".
Beautiful photo, as well.
Embrace fall!

Wishing I had six stars to affix on your exceptionally well-crafted sonnet, Rod!
I love its plaintive tone.
And as an avid gardener, I surely understand the emotion that seeing the last rose of summer elicits.
Thank you for sharing!

A lovely message here, Rod! I love that last line and your whole verse is so sweet and poignant as you personify the rose and demonstrate your appreciation and gratitude, never being over sentimental but just spot-on. A beautiful sonnet! Well done! Debbie
