This was a fun and gratifying chapter to read, Lea--at least the recollection part. The first part, where you describe your feelings about hearing your mother's voice confirming everything you always thought, was horrible, but the year you spent with P and his family gave not only you, but your readers a brief respite from the horror of your life.
I'm so glad you at least had that one good year to help restore your faith in mankind and to help teach you some of the skills you may have been lacking.
Your last sentence gives us a sense of foreboding, though, as it sounds like the guy you met may not have been great for you. If that's so, at least something good came out of it--your son. I'm anxious to see how this develops. - Jim

Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
I wouldn't beat yourself up about not doing things sooner to address issues from your childhood. It often takes time and a lot of growing-up to get everything in perspective and, of course, to grow in confidence. What you're doing now is right but you still can't afford to invest too much emotion into the court process because this could end up compounding your heartbreak. The book is your default and will hopefully stand you in good stead. Whatever the case, your story will be out in the open and this journey will be immensely cathartic for you. It's wonderful reading about the simple pleasures you have in this happy home and your opportunity to laugh and feel at ease for the first time. It's a transitional stage that is essential to restore you back to health both mentally and physically.
There are some small edits along the way: Intro - (T)ime to go on again..; main story - I decided not (to) stop to analyze...but simply (enjoy); when my sides (hurt) so much..; P kept calling him (I)tchy; that was the limit of their (transgressions?); spread out a blanket and (watch); Once in (a while); what it was (to) feel safe; (M)ost of all I learned..; Remembering those times... (take a look at this final para, Lea)
Hope this helps a bit. I enjoyed the read. As ever, your very vivid and honest prose skilfully captures this stage in your life. Take care. Love Debbie x

It is aways a relief to see you in a natural situation where everyone acts like people are supposed to act. I glad you were able to be there for a while and start to know what a normal family life was like.

Ah the wheel of life, we all experience it, but in different ways depending on our environment, my early home life was in a house where my parent argued incessantly, one could say it was fractured, so I got an insight into normalcy in my friend's homes, coming home late, now you know Lea, beautifully written, blessings Roy

It seems things were going very well for you at this time. That's good. I can't wait to read more.
But she's still in the stage of not knowing and we must help her along. (comma after knowing)
"look out!" and "he's behind you!" (Look & He's)
"ITCHY!!" He yelled. (he)
"P started howling! Laughing his face off. (don't need beginning quotation marks)
"Works everytime," P chuckled. (every time. Period after time)
With my new friends,we went camping (space after comma)
most of all I learned that life (Most)
