I think this is an absolutely natural part of maturity. All children accept what their parents believe, but at some point they have to appropriate it for themselves. And as you point out they may do it in different ways. If It doesn't happen till much later, then it seems to be more traumatic. Beautiful poem bringing out that unusual point. Thanks for sharing! My oldest son said that the greatest tool I ever gave him in life was telling him to never take anyone's word for anything, including my own, and to learn the truth for himself. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful piece and so powerfully true. What I do may not be for you, but sharing a lesson is always good!!
If I may offer a critique:
"But to each one is given things
to make sure that we know."
I thought perhaps, (But each of us is given things), sounded like it may fit a little better. Just my opinion, ma'am.
No other SPAG critique to offer.

A great entry for the contest, Beth. Definitely true. This would also explain why we have so many denominations in the Christian religion. My mother rejected her father's Lutheran ministry and went with my father's Episcopalian leanings, but her heart was really metaphysical teachings which I readily accepted too.

Thank you for the review. There comes a time when we need to do what we feel is best. We don't need to go along with what feels right for another person. The decision is up to us.

Face is a word and I'm one of the lucky ones to have the extra sense to know that God is truly there. Our souls never really die we simply go home to God when we're done here having learned the lessons we set out to learn. Wonderful poem I must say and beautiful too written by a very talented parents I wish you best of luck in the contest it's a real stunner! Casino issues with aesthetic subject matter sentence structure or grammar a great submission and I hope you have a great day too!

Thank you for liking my poetry. I like yours as well. You have a give for writing free style and I envy and your can write in rhyme too. We agree about faith.

I can remember going through this process when I left home to go to university. I was lucky to encounter lots of Christian friends there who supported me through this. I agree - your faith needs to be your own.

I'm sure you've heard the old adage that "God doesn't have grandchildren". I think God wants us to question and come to Him fully of our own free will. But I also think that it doesn't have to be so individual as sometimes whole families come to faith at once like the jailer's family in Acts.

Thank you Helen. I would think even a whole family did come at once each one of the would have excepted the God into their heart and it would still be an individual thing.

Very well crafted. And you are right. I heard the saying that God has no grandchildren, and that is so. It has to be an individual faith. An excellent entry for the contest. Best wishes.

Faith must be something that is infinitely personal to the individual and not just a mantra inherited unquestionably. Your verse flowed beautifully with assured rhyme and conveyed a strong message about how faith works for you. Well done and good luck, Beth! Debbie

Thank you Debbie. Faith is so vital in all of our lives but there is degrees of it and I know there are those whose faith is stronger than mine. It is a work in progress.

I honestly think that is the very best approach rather than drilling religion into people.
Comment from Rosemary Everson1
Faith is how believers come to God and put their trust in Him for salvation. God provides believers with the faith needed to believe in Him. If we don't have faith, life would be difficult.
Your poem is wonderful. It was great how your parents taught you about faith and God.
