Riveting and compassionate and love surely drips with each stanza of the love you felt for your grandmother. Love the ebb and flow from one line to the next in this one and the storytelling factor. Well done. thank you for sharing and good luck in the contest. xoxo Kiwi

You've done a marvellous job of interweaving a sense of discovery and mystery with one of sentiment and recollection. And what a magical true story, to boot!

Mike, ok now I am really on cloud nine. I awoke to a few reviews of this work and did not know why, since it has been long tucked away. Then when I saw a glowing review from you I was even more astounded. I checked my pm's and saw the nomination. I have to laugh in spite of myself, for not only am I up against you[ one of the finest and truly talented poets on this iste], but a host of orthers that I consider of the finest cut in poet calibre. I am humbled, so very humbled..thank you so very much..thank you..jlsavell

I love this beautiful story/poem. I could not help but read it as soon as I saw the title and note about a grandmother as I had written a poem about my grandmother too. It is so true how grandmothers keep their special memories and things that they love. Being a grandmother now myself and also loving the scent of lavender, (such a clean scent) I have my old love letters and special jewels all bundled up with a red ribbon for my grandchildren. I see your poem as quite romantic and the story of Emma and Edwin made me want to peek into their lives further to see and hear more of the love they secretly shared.

How very beautiful and full of such love this poem is. This is truly a great poem. I can't tell you how this touched me. I could smell the odor of the chest, and see the beautiful bound bundle of letters. Gave me chills. Loved it.

Every grandmother or the mother for that matter must be a young women with twinkling stars. Also first love or true love is difficult to forget.
You did justice by paying tribute to her and her memories. Enjoyed reading it.

Thank you for the memories. I was raised in Tennessee in the 1940s and had loads of pen pals that I corresponded with using penny postcards. I have no idea what postcards now cost. I am a grandmother myself now and correspond with my friends through FanStory. :-)

Wonderful story and beautifully written. I too loved my grandmother who was born in the late 1800's. She was an Irish immigrant, who learned to speak without the brogue as the Irish were looked down on at that time. She became a school teacher and traveled far into the Tenn mountains to join my grandfather who moved every few years to new parts of the backwoods, setting up schools and training the older girls to become teachers. She had an adventurous life, but a sad one as she left all family behind when she denied her Irish heritage. She was very brave and I miss her. Your poem brought back such nice memories of her. Thank you for sharing.

This is an exquisite poem about the secret drawer of a charming grandmother. Your poem is original in content and format. There is a special gift you have of feeling the taste and flavor of words, and therefore, create such a special atmoshpere so well enhanced by the terrific artwork illustrating your poem:
"Postcards in the drawer, the musky drawer
Aged and frayed with the scent of old oak
Bundled neatly by a red ribbon"

I can totally relate to this beautifully written memoir about your grandmother I have a similar drawer where I've lovingly and sometimes sadly deposited written memories of long ago. This is truly one of the most heartwarming submissions I've read in a long time. Thanks for sharing. Zitaca
