Ingrid, this is a very interesting story of dynamics, sacrifices and coming to grips. Philosophy seems like an ivory tower subject, but it really lives mostly in the kitchen and the bedroom. I hear one partners dealing with philosophical issues, while the other is backtracking every step of the way. Life is sooooo complicated.
Peace, Lee

This is superbly written and conveys a message many of us have not considered. I wish I had a 6 to give you, this most definitely deserves one. Excellent story and a terrific entry for this contest.

This is very well written. I don't approve of hunting, myself, so I understand. This is well written, it has a plot an a well established character. My suggestion would be to watch the use of the word that. I noted two down below, but there are a couple others.
Ivan's family knew that if they didn't work, they didn't eat. (omit that, it's an extra word)
Every kill meant that the family would have meat. (again the that)

Echo-
Very well written piece!
You tell the story so well, with understanding and acceptance, while maintaining your own stance on the topic.
My personal view on the topic are quite irrelevant, but suffice it to say that your story is so well written that no one should find fault with you, either way. Of course some will, given human nature, but their opinions too, are irrelevant.
This is seriously good writing.
Brava!

I really enjoyed this piece. You truly captured the essence of man and his quest, and how he relates to the natural world around him. Your usual distinct but fluid style did not disappoint me. You said much in a few words. Stan

No real good down time until yesterday evening and today. Too much of the real world gets in my way. Stan

Ingrid...this is a six, so sorry, I wish you had posted this a few days ago. OUTSTANDING! My father was a hunter, and he butchered our meat, from the llivestock we raised too. I once held the legs of a lamb while he cut it's throat. It had to be done, but I ran. I hid in the haymow and cried for hours. Hours. And to this day, well. I wish I could be a vegetarian. It's hard to change. Perfect essay, this will do well. Luv, susan

I remember my father hunting and bringing home hares that lay dead in the basement and I lay down beside them, petting them, apologizing to the universe for my dad's sins. He killed the Easter bunny! I am not morally vegetarian and can snap into the odd hamburger or steak, but I am so concious of my choices and don't look at food without knowing that something died to feed me Your Dad was probably right. You need to lnow where the food comes from as painfula reality as it is, we are part of the food chain.
And by the way, I'm not so sure it will do well. The writing is fine, but as everyone chomps down on their sausages and mash there is an attitude about hunters that is down right negative.

Well, I hope this wins. I am entering too, but not started yet. You are the real writer Ingrid. This country is just blood thirsty, that's all there is to it. Sad too. xoxo. susan

The reality is that I hope we all win, find a route a path and an ultimate goal.

That's a good attitude, I agree...s.

Rare are the six-stars I give. You sooo earend this. Not only was your story expertly written, it was one I can completely, over-whelmingly, 100% relate to and empathize with. You perfectly described OUR household, OUR relationship, OUR annual rituals of the hunt. Right down to me going back to bed. My God - this is like watching one of our home movies. My husband hunts - I support and experience all the emotions and thoughts you so aptly write about.
I can't wait to show my other half this. He's gonna want to dump me and marry you!!! Great, great job.

Great, I'm a born again virgin, havi been a widow for eleven years. You husband is sure in for a treat of you sacrifice him now, But this is a true memory of my life with Ivan or at least a small slice of our mutual indifferance to things we could ot possibly share.

Spiritual Echo,
Since I live only an hour's drive away from natural elk and moose habitat, I can relate to every word of this essay. I do not, however, savor the hunt and consider it to be an overall waste of time, money, and effort. Thanks for posting this.

Spiritual Echo ,
Thanks for sharing; this has enlightened me. For years, I have wanted to know what keeps me in the wilderness for hours in the cold of the night or the winter waiting for just a deer or a moose, and why they tolerate all of the loosened manners...I know now...they are still looking for the thing that I thought that they had found...good writing..

and you too, i am sure, pee into a jar so that the deer will not pick up your scent....but do tell...did it resonate any truth?

I am not a hunter, but it sounded real to me. Men..now that's a word.
