A very practical write Ingrid. This is good information. I recall floundering around for two months before I got my legs under me. You have answered much of my wonderment. Merry Christmas to yoiu my friend.

Very interesting and informative commentary, especially for new members to the site. The advice about reviewing is good, I always tell a new writer to make themselves known by reviewing as much as possible. I spotted an error. Para 1, should read 'learning curve'. Enjoyable read and have a Happy Holiday. Faye

Basing on the information presented in this article, it would seem to me that seniority is no longer one of the basis of recognition among the fans of this site. The long struggles by writers who had made a name of their own are to begin again from the start. While it is not hard on their part to start all over again and get a recognition as in the previous years, a new comer who just
starts beginning New Year, and the old are on equal footing.
Let me cite an example, Adewpearl, the number in the Poet's list, and on the short stories Spiritual Echo, and all others would start all over again. I'm just wondering if this is fair to them, although in a short period of time, they will return back and make the grade. But surely, there will be few who will make it to the top quickly whose names we have not seen before.
If this is a better deal for management, it is not a good deal for those who had been in fanstory for so many years. I would suggest that to compensate the struggles made by these authors, Give the current top ten in each category--
some kind of honors, too, before the start of this new rule.
Make a list in which years they have excelled, and, perhaps down below, a big RED NOTE that this year's ranking starting 2015, will be the free for all categories. It is something to this effect. I may be misreading the contents of this article, but to me, this article is well written. The tone, I believe, is something to be reckoned with. Some points that are worth considering. Thank you Ingrid for reminding your readers. To me, however, it is a new information which I did not happen to read from FanStory's changes. Thanks for sharing. Dom

The "writers vault'. I like that. I found your essay interesting and informational, especially for the "newbies" as you put it. Hey, even for me its a reminder. I have a tendency of becoming very comfortable which leads to complacency, so a little kick in the gludious-maximus is well taken.
Have a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year. John

Where were you when I first joined. I was so totally lost the first few months I didn't even know how to properly read the front page. I like you, like constructive criticism and not a simple 'fluff' review. Of course, I need to stop writing silly rambles and move on to real writing with substance. That's my New Year's resolution. I have already begun to work on a few. Thanks for the helpful suggestions for the newbies...and old timers like me. You still are one of my favorite writers, and am sure you will not disappoint me next year.

Hi Ingrid,
first you write an essay on how great and professional the new formatted site is, and now your giving tips to negotiate the site... come on... when did you get the paid gig with fanstory? What do you mean you're not getting paid? Your just writing, 'cause you can't stop your fingers dancing across keyboards. Take a breath sweetie, you need to just relax for a couple of hours, maybe a day... hmmmmm, I'm starting to wonder if all the 'new' in the on site look is for a new suitor to come in and take over... maybe all this online helpful advice for the so-called newbies has answered some questions to as the new CEO might be?... a new website you say?... I say the conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day, what do you mean it's only me?... for me nothing changes, I seek out your help to problems on this site often... smile))))))).
Have a wonderful Christmas 'boss', to you and your family, be well, be safe and do I address the cheque to fanstory or Spiritual Echo?... you can help me out with the ratings next year... right?

I don't expect to be very visible next year proving the theory--out of sight, out of mind.
No, it's not me buying FS, but believe me, I have the resume, the talent and the passion to run this business--it's just not mine and never will be,. But the idea is ticklish. I would love to knock a few arrogant assholes off their perch. If I can write well--it still won't make me a better person and there are decent, talented and far more affluent people than me on this site. If I could afford a buy-in--I'm too lazy for a buy-out--I'd do it. It changed my life, but I earned and paid for the opportunity to grow. We may have allegiance to our universities, but 'they' didn't do the work, simply provided the means.
My infomercial was really altruistic, remembering how I felt when I got stripped of all I thought' I'd earned. I wanted to spare new dreamers the pain. Sure, FS should send me a gift certificate for the ten bucks I spent promoting the info, but then again--if it made any difference, and it doesn't--more people read this than anything serious--thus spurring me further up my #5 position.
I feel very close to you, and do treasure our 'talks.' Merry Christmas, buddy. What did you get me as a present? Huh, huh, huh? A story? Be safe and yes, you are in my thoughts. ingrid

Crap, I didn't know any of this. Well, I don't read the small print, or even the big print. I think it sucks. Whatever you mean, not what you wrote. I am easily knocked off my rocker. Oh well.

I shared exactly the same reaction the first time it happened and absolutely know that few newer members are in the dark--hence the essay--an act of kindness.

Good job of summarizing the rankings battle for newcomers, who may have just joined in 2014. I am number one novelist this year and will get that trophy, but next year I hope to switch to other things, little bit of poetry, little of short works, and not post every day. It's been fun posting six novels, but it's getting to be boring. I took a break from it once, and now it's time to do that again... maybe forever. Anyway, good luck in the new year in every way, remembering fanstory is just one part of a much broader life... at least that will be my new year's resolution! I have to get away from this computer and get some exercise! :)

You'll have to check out my own web site. I'm launching in late January as a showcase for my writing that makes me #1 every day of the year. Merry Christmas. Ingrid. Thomson.ca or Ingrid Thomson, AKA Spiritual Echo--her writing.

Ingrid, that's a really good idea. I'll watch for it. Be sure to announce it to everyone. :)

I do the same thing with poems, Ingrid. I have probably 50 or more haiku, senryu and 5-7-5's of varying themes saved, a couple of story poems, and several darker, more horrific works that aren't yet posted. However, I do also write many new ones as different contests and prompts come up if I don't have anything to fit already written. I too write literally hundreds of words a day, especially between reviewing here, and working on my own stuff.
As to whether or not your posts will get any reviews without being promoted by applying mass amounts of certificates to them, I'm here to tell you unequivocally no, it ain't gonna happen, not even for "ranked" writers. Just like in the "real world", people feel that their time is valuable, and that they should be "paid" for their efforts. I used to read poems and stories by those who are fans of mine, and vice versa, that only paid two cents, but I don't anymore. They don't do it for me, so why should I be expected to be the only one who has to be all Mr. Goody Two Shoes about it?
I look forward to being at ground zero, personally, if I have the time to stick around at all, that is. With the publisher who is going to be promoting my book next summer clamoring for more dark poems and stories, I may not get the chance to be. I certainly hope not, LOL...
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.
