Hi Mikey,
I didn't realise you had posted this. do they not notify fans if it is a contest piece. I have given up trying to review now because I am to afraid to get it wrong. I wait until the weekend when I am obliged to review those in the potlatch challenges and my fans but the rest I don't bother with because I am to afraid to, so I am sorry I have missed this. This is awesome and so true, people bitch but when you offer solutions you get shouted down or criticised.
We should always be watching each others backs.
Great read hun, sorry my review is a little late.

They don't notify blind contest entries, no. Don't be afraid to review. You can't get it wrong. Just tell people what you think. That's what people want to know. Most of the time we'd rather hear what you think about a piece than we would all the technical crap. How did it make you feel, did it touch you, was it easy to follow, was it confusing, was it easy to read, hard, etc. Punctuation and all that is cool, but plenty of people will cover that. I rarely point that stuff out myself.
No worries about being late. You don't even know it's me. LOL
Thanks a million. Anonymous mystery writer and cutie pie. :))

Damn well said. In passing, do not know what constitutes profanity...words are words and circumstances may decide the meaning. A friend might say "you're a fucking genius" and give you a hug or he might say ..."you'r a fucking ass hole" and get a fat lip.
Recently, I was directed by a member not to review his posting anymore, no big deal. All I did to bruise his ego was suggest that he do some editing on a jumble of a story, hurt his ego, I reckon.
I have had some wake-up reviews and I found these reviews extremely helpful. So, anyway enjoyed your posting. I totally agree with you.

I've had a couple reviews that just broke me down like a dog. But, damn, they were sure good on the money helpful reviews that made me a better writer. So, yep, bring it on. As long as I get four or five liars to tell me I'm wonderful in between I'm good to go! HAHAHAHA!!! There are a few plain old mean folk here, but most are totally cool and helpful.
Glad you liked this. I shoot my mouth off once in a while. I feel better afterwards. Thanks a million. :))

Well, unfortunately, no other website compares to this one. So, we need to keep this one from going to pot. There's plenty of resources here. There's really only a few idiots, but they're loud. LOL
And now for some shameless advertising:

Wow friend,
I am a little taken aback by this post. I come in peace...lol
Your ranting style is your nomenclature, did you know that?
At this time it saddens me greatly that I have disabled most of my work, deleted my fan base and left the game. This as you know are for reasons which are quite understandable, new career move with a new personal business I am trying to build from ground up and it is taking more of my energy and focus. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss most of the comradery on here and the great community of writers. I do have to return every once in a while to find gems such as these and you. You are a gem.
I do not know if you are being facetious or sarcastic or passive aggressive(naaaa!!!!) when speaking of Pam, Maureen and Brooke. These three were some of the most talented and endearing women around. Another was Wendyanne. Yes, they did set the bar on true class and altruism. Those who sit in the same spot now have the same character and the same values. They are worthy of their station for many reasons.. Integrity, class, humbleness and friggin sheer talent. Of course we are talking about Gloria and Cat, Robyn and Joy, but those are the ladies and I do not mean to leave the guys out. They deserve their accolades too.
I am not aware of malicious gossip or green envy remarks being target at any of these people or even you or anyone else.
I hope that I would certainly call out anyone who has blatantly, carelessly, and unlovingly accused or spread lies about another. My friend, I realize this has gone on and on and on. It is no different a community of humanity than a work environment, a church environment, the great neighborhood of Desperate Housewives or Peyton Place. Where people gather it is human nature. I never said it was right, I said it was human nature. Unfortunately, there are few in this world who do not thrive on dirty laundry and there are few in this world who have the grace, the character and the values to stand amid the crowd. Toxicity abounds. The scriptures say, "Bad association spoils useful habits, it does not say useful habits rub off on bad associates. The law of dynamics,, you put a rotten apple in a barrel of good apples, what happens? Precisely, all the apples turn rotten because that apple gives off toxic fumes.
My dear Grandmother Emma would say, "The purpose of the heart runs in deep oceans, it is only the wise and the humble who know how to draw it out." She also said, "Being imperfect is no excuse for bad behavior, instead it affords us an opportunity to rise above the uncomfortable and do the right thing, regardless of whether it benefits you or not, and regardless of how uncomfortable it makes you feel. This is when a person moves from the animal kingdom to being truly noble and honorable, being Christlike.
To you my friend, I cannot say that I am not guilty of trying to settle a score with anyone. However, the difference is, I felt I came forward to defend the blatant lies and hearsay scored on me. Do I feel victorious and right in doing so? No. Why, because it is foolish. The scripture says, "A fool answers before being spoken to."
Do I feel there are vicious outrageous gossipers on here, I do not just feel, I know. Sadly, these are the very ones who claim they are being lied about. Perhaps trying to justify their wrongdoing. There is no justification in wrongdoing, regardless of reason. You see my friend, I see your rage and I feel it, but on a very personal level.. this is one reason why I am not writing or posting anymore. The malware abounds and it abounds by those you least suspect. I do not want to be a part of something which is not good for me nor my emotional health.
It is funny you should mention different accounts to garner votes. I have actually been accused of opening different accounts to harass..really?? Hysterical. I do not even have the time for my own account much less the time nor the interest, nor the desire to haunt and harass someone clearly not worth my attention. So be it, you are right, all they have to do is find the connecting ip addresses. Some accuser are absolutely and undeniably schizoid paranoid idiots and the ones who buy into it and follow are no less than a frightened bigot who will believe anything. They are parroting birds which fly from city to city, gleefully giving the latest dirty laundry. It tickles their idle asses.
I hate that Fanstory has turned into this kind of machine. There is so much talent on here, so much. There is also talent to be developed on here and there are many good people willing and able to nurture and help develop the wittle scribbling varmints.. I am just trying to be funny.. those wittle scribbling varmints will grow to be bigger versifiers with each stroke of the pen and with each affirmation that they should continue with their passion.
You are right, we are a prideful lot. Most say they can take criticism, but most cannot. Perhaps it is the way one offers criticism. I do believe there should be a class on reading and understanding literature and poetry along with delivering a helpful insight and review. My Grandmother Emma would say, "If you are to critique(critique operative word, not criticize) someone you must lather them before you shave them.
On the flip side of the coin, there are many on here who truly believe that everything they put to pen is gold and they are the very ones who also believe their shit don't stink!!!!! My Grandmother Emma, would once again say, "Tell me what is most important to you and I will tell you what kind of person you are."
In my personal life, I can say, I wish I had heeded her wisdom, because I would never had experienced what I had experienced in the last two years. Ahhh but hindsight is 20/20, is it not. All I am saying, arrogance and fools come out of the woodwork easily. Most easily. And foolishness digs their own grave.
You are a good person my friend. I cannot see why someone would speak ill of you or any of the ones you mentioned. It is not comprehendible.
Your rant is heard and it is humbling. I am a good person too and a truly introspective person. When hurt, I hurt. When angry, I do want to lash out and have, but only when provoked. Not a good side of me and not an excuse, but the difference between many of us is pessimism and optimism. WE EACH HAVE AN EXPLANATORY STYLE. I AM AN OPTIMIST.
A pessimist will always always, always BLAME OTHERS FOR THEIR FAILURES AND AN OPTIMIST WILL ACCEPT THEIR FAILURE AND SHORTCOMINGS AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS. AN OPTIMIST IS HUMBLE, A PESSIMIST IS FULL OF HIMSELF AND WILL NEVER EVER APOLOGIZE FOR HIS BEHAVIOR NOR TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT.
You are an asset to Fanstory.. take care dear dear friend.

Hi, Jimi
Great to hear from you. You seem to be able to lay down some words yourself. Do you write? LOL
We're in agreement across the board. I often just shoot my big mouth off and exaggerate and cajole and scream, but really I'm just stirring things up and hoping to get folks riled to do something. I think that the vast majority of the people here are wonderful, indeed, I know it. But, we can't just sit here and see a few idiots ruin things. We need to act TOGETHER to monitor things. Tom can't and shouldn't. He's running a business.
Well, I think you know where I'm coming from, so I'm pleased at that. I hope things are going beautifully with your new enterprise. I miss you and your talent. I'm so happy you are able to pop in for a visit. Try and make a point of it, yes?
Hugs, mikey

No shirt Sherlock! I , most possibly can write missives and philosophical bantering much better than poetry. Truly, I am not a passionate poet, just a passionate personality.
Thank you for the well wishes. I am feeling good about everything and the new adventure is prospering well, so well I am excited and looking at condos on the water in Lake Charles.
You know this last year opened my eyes to a lot. Hard lessons learned, but that is life. Actually, I had been thinking about this new adventure for some time and even planning, nut I let certain things get in the way, such as an ex-boyfriend who was not good for me. I knew it from the moment I met him, but left my good sense at my Grandmother 's grave. Actually, his deceit and hatred and unkind judgement , though left me bruised, taught me a valuable lesson about myself. For that I owe him and the parrot he betrayed me with. He told others I was a stalker!lol, I was a wacko! Lol, and I had nothing but trash as far as material things go. The first two .. ludicrous. I have absolutely no desire to follow his manic arse, but he made me realize what I did not have in life and that was a great mass of material worthy things. I am a giving person and all my life have provided for instead of accrued. When I left, he and his parrot destroyed my things. Speaks of his character, for I would have never done that to him. Not ever. However, they are JUST material things, though some were extremely valuable memoirs of loved ones I have lost over the years. He didn't care. I began to assess my life again and decided it was time at my age to quit procrastinating about my real dream because I was too afraid to step out. Finally, I was forced by the slight of hand and heart to make a decision and I did and you know Mr. Cahill, I am so happy and yes thankful to the jerk and his parrot.
I have left writing for a while and am focusing on my personal journey of betterment and yes personal wealth. Eventually, I want to be able to help and inspire others who need to awaken their dreams and know beyond all doubt, they may fail a thousand times, but it doesn't make them a failure. A failure is one who fails and blames everyone but himself and just quits trying.
Well enough said, follow me on Facebook. I am working on some of my post. Stay in touch. Much love and respect... Jimi

That's probably the only solution, get on with your life, enjoy the aspects of your membership that work for you and ignore the rest. The prompt itself, though I think it was well-intended, had been tried in the past to bring attention to areas where FS could become even better, but this time, it's almost a plea to get the site back.
I'm sure all these shenanigans were happening before, but now it dominates the site. Just like your example of getting multiple memberships at a high cost, I do wonder what's in it for the offender. All those accumulated dollars, yet I don't promote 'my' work? Well how about if I host a dozen contests looking for praise for other members? Will I make friends then? No? Well at least I'll have my trophy at the end of the year to show everybody how important I am. This is all evidence of someone who really must be sick, especially if this behaviour is maintained until the end of the year.
There is no leadership. The current culture is fan created and there is no Alpha dog who will stand up for his own baby. It is being administered solely as a business, and we need to accept his terms and conditions. I'm quite certain he couldn't care less how outraged you or I might become, there will always be new members with fresh Visa cards. It could have been so much more, but Tom is a web designer, not a writer. Why should he care?

A very concise and accurate assessment. Your conclusion has been born out recently as fact and that leaves us, the members, as the only policing force. Sadly, we are powerless to do anything. There just isn't enough interest within the general membership to care. There are some, but some doesn't cut it and I know that from personally wasting a month trying. :))
So, yep, report what can be reported and hang out with the people you like and TRY and ignore the idiots. It is worthwhile enough to do that I think. Thanks for the great input.

ah...because "we" didn't first think of it. Hey Mike...-smile- Fan...story. a "body" comes wondering how or if his or her expression will be accepted....and for "most" they find affirmative response. If they play the game you review me and I now obligated, review you. One thing it certainly is ...Fanstory...is an ever confirming realization of human nature.
I think...if not by "original" design then certainly Fanstory has evolved into more than just people looking to be taught established forms. indeed variation pendulums from a relaxing hobby to leaving last will in written testament.
When I first came...I too was confused...I would read and know there where others who were ranked way beneath me...that turned my best efforts pale when compared.
Likewise there where some ranked in the hierarchy who obviously where relatives of someone very important inside the corporation....-smile-
Let say tomorrow Tom decided to reorganize or reinforce this sites design exclusively for... very serious persons only, willing and expecting brutal honesty in critique, given of course by our very own highly trained associates, who's own portfolio's bare their fruit of expertise....not to mention all the money they make outside this site for the want of their written words.
it wont work...successfully enough to be profitable.
and I'm glad for that...now. As I read you tell Boo...poetry is not music. at least its not for the "established" keepers of the fundamental forms.
of course, in my opinion they have there place long established and apparently sold out of appeal according to sales.
what happens is what has happened. We become familiar with one another. friends are made...lunch seating is carefully arranged and fingers start pointing. the one thing that brought us all together is lost after while...no longer is it "okay" to extoll or praise a work written by someone who sits at another table in the same school. because of the backlash from our "friends"
ya know Mike. I can safely say that i'm talked about more behind my back then I am to my face, confirmed every time I release now. I know because I've read some of it with my own eyes. but in truth some of the very people that sit at your lunch table have been responsible for purposely seeking to damage me. I too have evolved since my birth here. My reason for releasing my own personal poetic expression has also...I'm okay if none of them read me...in truth , I don't want people reading me just because I sit at their table. I enjoy creating in the moment...with or without them. Peace to you Brother. love Michael

I do understand more and more as time passes exactly what you mean. There's a strange sense of ownership here that seems so out of place considering we're supposed to be artists. The feeling of stepping on toes keeps occurring to me. Ooops, I've written something using THEIR form. Hmmm. I wonder if a musician thinks that when a fellow pianist sees someone else playing the piano. "He's playing MY instrument." Well, a strange tangent. LOL
Yeah, the behind the back stuff is not nice, but I've grown not to care and that's the right response. I've stopped with the pleasing of "them" too. I'm enjoying writing more now that I write what I want. Great points, Michael. Keep on doing what you do, NO ONE ELSE IS and I pretty sure no one else can. :))

Hey,
Maybe I know you, maybe I don't. I've been away awhile, but it's good to see that nothing has changed... ;) I have (or had!) so many great friends here that I always end up coming back. I want to check in and see what they are writing, how they are doing, and if they are still around!
The purpose of fanstory is writing. Whether to just get your writing out there (scary the first time!) or looking for constructive feedback to become a better writer. I can never understand why everyone gets into an uproar over a four star rating. Or a three. I've gotten ones and twos and I was okay with it. I mean, it hurt my feelings, but made my writing better. When people have attacked me for a low star review, I just send it off to Tom. I don't engage. I'm only here to help. If you don't want my help. That's ok too.
The contests are a whole other can of worms. I think it can be a popularity contest at times, but it is what it is. Take the good with the bad. There is so much good here if you participate, are open to taking advice, and can have a bit of sense of humor. And yes, be effing honorable! :)
Loved this, by the way. Fun to read, probably has stirred up some controversy and (I hope) a lot of laughs.

You don't, but you will. :))
I have heard of you and I can see by your review your reputation is well earned. I agree with pretty much everything you have to say. I'm impressed that you remember what it's like to start out AND that you still have such a great level headed attitude towards the whole operation. I try to as well. Of course, I nice shoot my mouth off rant helps every once in a while. Thanks for an awesome review. :))

Interesting. Second rant on FanStory I've read in the past little bit. I've learned quite a bit, too, though I've been a working writing for decades (stuff that pays...business writing/technical writing). So the education may be worth the price I'm paying. Still, I'm also seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (when renewal time comes up!) I needed to see what "winning a writing contest" felt like, energetically, so I could use that energy out in the real world. Well, I've won a couple (using the aforementioned tricks), but at least I've got the feeling. Thanks for your eye-opening rant!

You'll run across a rant here and there. I've got a pretty big mouth and I shoot it off from time to time. LOL
All in all, this is an awesome place and there are more than a few great people here. There's some who aren't so great and we need to keep them from getting too big a foothold is all. Thanks for some great input.
Comment from William Ross
this is a good rant on fanstory, you can't let a few get you down , in the few months I've been here met a lot some really great people, I just try to weed out the assholes, there are a few in every crowd, that's tom's problem, or fanstory police if there are any out there that help tom out. breaking rules is a way to weed these people out or kick them out, way out of my hands, and I am sure there are far many to complaints for tom to even start looking into, and how do you fan out the real ones form the just complainers.
I don't write for rating, I write because I enjoy to, if your thrill is rip me apart, hey that's your thing. they want to as you say rip off my fake money by posting a few words, just shows how hard up they are to earn some posting money.
I find most of the ones doing this can't write their way out of a wet paper bag anyway.

William, you are right on the money. There aren't a lot of assholes and honestly it's up to us to band together to get rid of them. In the meantime, there's plenty of great people here to interact with. Thanks for the great feedback. ;))
Comment from Dean Kuch
I recently used those vaunted, much beloved member's names in a review for Chasennov's piece about leaving this site, Mike. However, I would hardly call my statement "dragging their names through the mud," as you so eloquently put it.
I did it because they are prime examples of some of the finest talent this site of like-minded individuals has had to offer, and because I respect them. So, if I could care less what they think, just imagine how little I care about what anyone else thinks--including you--about my writing.
No offense intended. Just making a point.
So, just to clear the air, I went and copied my statement verbatim from my review:
"If one is writing simply for the love of the written word, and one is pleased with the results of their efforts, does it really matter what anyone else thinks, Chase?
If the answer is no, then could one call the exploration of their talents a real "time-waster, ball-twister" or "nut-grinder"?
I don't believe that's true.
To be quite honest, I couldn't care less what you, adewpearl, Gungalo, Maureen, or any one of a dozen much beloved poets, both past and present, thought or think of my work.
I write to please me, and only me. And, if what pleases me pleases others too, then so be it, that's fantastic. If not, well, that's okay too. We all have opinions, and we are all entitled to them." ... Did you catch that part, Mike? The "much beloved" part of that statement? Because those members I mentioned are forever -- and will ALWAYS be -- much beloved by me as well.
Okay, I've got it. This is flat fucking genius. Why the fuck don't you crybabies just vote in the damn contests that you bitch about constantly? Do you think that might solve the problem? I doubt any of the hardcore cheaters could muster up thirty votes. I could never get more than four or five myself. ... Now there's a novel idea, huh? God knows, I couldn't possibly contact everyone to ask for their vote, especially if all the Pissy Missies here who hate my guts would get off their f@t asses and vote. That would certainly solve the problem, right? But no, they'd much rather moan, groan, bitch and complain about it than to actually DO something about it. I think they live for that sh!t ...
Then you have the cry babies. The one's here who restrict a contests creativity so badly with all of their ridiculous rules concerning no artwork, no animations, no sound FX, no this, and no that, blah-blah-blah..., ad infinitum, just to drag a contest down to their level (level the playing field) in the hopes of scoring a big "W" for themselves, and to the point that it makes you want to hurl. Instead of taking the time to learn the same things themselves, they'd much rather play the "victim", the damsel in distress, . The only reason they won't take the time to learn is because their foolish pride is much too huge to admit to anyone that they could use a little help with things once in a while. They would then have to admit they're not as smart, perhaps, or technically gifted, and maybe not as intelligent as the individual who is more than willing to teach them. That they could NEVER allow themselves to admit. And when you beat them at their own game, time, and time, and time, and time again? O-h-h-h-hhhhhh, that's when their TRUE colors come out, along with their fu@king claws!
Good rant, Mike, and I agree with the majority of what you've written here. One thing I vehemently disagree with however is this:
Not everyone who wins a lot of contests on FanStory has to cheat to do so. You've won a LOT of contests here, you said so yourself. You also went on to say that you quit entering BECAUSE you were so often ACCUSED of cheating.
Readers here aren't dumb, nor are they naive. No amount of technical wizardry is going to sway them into casting their vote for you whether they know who you are or not. To imply that--to make such an accusation--is not only offensive to me, it's also rather insulting to the intelligence of all here who care enough to take their valuable time and cast a vote for one contestant or another. The number of fans you've acquired don't matter in the slightest either. I personally have well over 400 fans (all of whom I called or emailed, along with a $50.00 check and a vial of my blood, to retain their services begging them to fan me...ahem), and I too may be lucky to receive five votes in any given contest. Many times it's far less. If you put your all into anything you enter in a contest, along with all of the things you write and post which AREN'T entered in a contest, I like to believe readers can pick up on that. You can polish a turd all day long until the cows come home. But, at the end of the day, it will still be a piece of sh!t when you're through.
If you gotta cheat to win, what have you gained in the end, really?
Not one damned thing...

We're on the same page across the board, Dean. I've been in the same boat you're in. I recall one of the first pieces I read here and it was one that SOLD me on this place. It was one you wrote about the ocean complete with music and animation and fantastic writing. It was a helluva an experience. "Yeah, I want to do this." That's what I thought. I still think that and I'm learning little by little.
And, mercy, is it ever HARD WORK producing quality presentations. Damn, it takes me hours sometimes doing one of those embeds in paint with the words over a picture, getting the right font and placing each word in the picture properly so it can be read etc. There's no magic wand and a button to push. It's a skill that takes work and time. I'm completely clueless as a tech. Yet, I'm doing a lot of it. So, no one has an excuse.
Winning every contest? HAHAHA! How many do we lose? That used to kill me after losing ten in a row when I'd hear I'd won every contest I'd entered. I KNOW you love that, yes?
Well, I know you don't have to cheat to win because I never did. And I know you don't either cause A. You don't have to and B. You get beat more often than you win. What the hell happened to your machine when you only get two votes? Geez, it's all so damn silly. Well, it's easy to get a head of steam on this topic. LOL
We can say to each other, "Ignore them", but we both know how damn hard that is to do for people who are actual human beings with feelings. Okay, thanks for the great input. I know I can always count on it from you.
-
If you ever want to learn to do something that I might be doing and you would like to know how to do, all you gotta do is send me an email and I'll teach you how. I've taught so many here to do the "techy stuff", getting calls from South Africa, the UK, Canada, Japan...pick a country (except South Korea), and I've been called from it. Do I get or ask for any credit? No, and rarely.
You're also right about losing far more contests than I win, but the Pissy Missies here don't notice how many times you lose now, do they?
I'm hangin' on by a thread here, buddy. I don't wanna leave FanStory, but a lot of this shit is getting old.
Take care...

Just remember, Dean, it's a very small group that makes a lot of noise. I called them out recently. Not one answered, but forty or fifty friends did. But, it's like a damn three. Somehow it just wipes out a hundred fives, I know. Hang in there. Christ, I can't take the place getting MORE boring. Jeesh! I'm a slow learner when it comes to tech stuff. It's all way over my head. LOL
-
Oh, I could teach you, my friend.
Trust me on this.
All you gotta do is send me a PM and tell me what you want to learn.
Think about it... :}
