A very well-written epigrams even the one you mean is not. It is a fun way to critique politicians and other news makers and help to bloe off steam about the wrongs in this world.

Hi Sandra,
Yes it is. I actually hadn't written one before. I'm considering using it as a style for Potlatch in May. I didn't see it on the list, so I'm thinking we haven't done it yet. I was really surprised to find so many of the famous poets had written them. Thanks for the great review.

I have written a few epigrams before, it is a good idea to take it on for Potlatch.

Thanks, I appreciate the input :)

This terrific satirical poem is a great addition to your book, Kim. I wish I had a six for you. Virtual six is all I can give. It hardly seems sufficient for the likes of such a well written piece.
You did a truly exceptional job on this poem. I laughed at quite a few of your lines in the 'Almost an Epigram, But Not' portion of your poem. I especially loved "beneath one flag - their mascot is an ass" ... too funny!
Thanks for your author notes and for leaving us with a selection of Epigrams that we can look at.

Hi Connie,
I had a good time reading and getting an understanding of epigrams today. I hadn't realized that they were a really big thing and that so many of the famous poets wrote them. I think we may try them in Potlatch in May, it is a style we haven't done yet. I'm glad you found the poems entertaining. I will take a virtual six from you any day of the week. I really appreciate the grand review. :)

I really like the style of the Epigram. It comes across as a bit cheeky with having a stinging end line. :) Probably a fun one to write and a good one for Potlatch.

Yeah, I got started railing on the Politicans and ran away with myself lol

This is excellent, Kim. Thank you for explaining the epigram. Regarding the content of your piece, I agree on an important point that you tried to make and that is--Congress must abide by ANY law that it passes--healthcare included. For members to be on a cushy plan that is (most likely) gratis and expect citizens to go bankrupt paying for theirs is outrageous. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn:
Absolutely. For too long now Congress has tried to make themselves exempt from the laws they want to pass for the people. I think we'd get better work out of them if we demand that they only pass things that they will live by, too. Because, in the end, they are playing with people's lives, and they just aren't that special. (Did I start to rant again? lol) Thanks for the great review.

We desperately need term limits for Congress. Get the lifetime bastards (oops! did I say that?) out of there. New blood in to refresh the gov and move on. More would be accomplished if they served their allotted terms and HAD to get off the public trough and go back to private life.
-
Absolutely! I feel absolutely the same way!!

Perhaps your epitaph is too long,
though it might make a really great song.
I still think we'll all get along -
with that ending it cannot be wrong.
It's clear I'm nor Omar Khayyam
nor a poet laureate from Siam;
to the slaughter I've come like a lamb -
God help me, I've butchered iamb.
You've done a great job with these epigrams, Kim. I also really enjoyed Poe's little contribution you reprinted for us.
One tiny thing:
Unite, they must to get this bill to pass --
not sure why you put the comma where it is. I think
Unite they must, to get this bill to pass --
might assist the flow more, or maybe even leave it out?
Very nice work :)

Hi Craig,
I think I just like commas lol epitaphs and epigrams are two different things, by the way :) I liked the Poe one so much that I put it on my Profile Thoughts today. Thanks for the great review, I'll go get rid of that comma now.

I'd blame the autocorrect, except FS doesn't have it. Seems my brain's autopilot might need tweaking.

lol I've been recording my AWS Poetry Reading selections. They sent an email today and want Titles and text lol It doesn't take very long to read a poem, I've discovered lol If you want, I'll send to you.

Sure, that would be great, thanks :)

A two-fer! An epigram, and an epic gram. Love them both. Agree completely with the sentiments of both. This body is not ready for prime time and the politicians are so bad that I have worn out three soap boxes already with all my rants. Kick 'em all out and start anew is my idea. No one there listens to me either. Thanks for the read. They were fun. - Wendy

Hi Wendy,
It is just me. I'd feel like I cheated if I just posted one epigram. Though, we do that all the time with 5-7-5's and haiku and such. That, and that second one is just what you said, a rant lol but it fit the form, so I went with it. Politically, we are absolutely on the same page. Kick 'em all out and start anew. That is the perfect idea. I wish we could. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I love winter. I love the clothes, running in from the cold, sitting by the fireplace, all those things. I absolutely dread summer.
I agree. When the bill passers have to live by the bills they pass for us, I will look at them with a little respect.

Hi Yvonne:
Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I'm thinking we haven't done this form in Potlatch before, so I may have us do a suite of the short epigrams for one of the weeks in May. What do you think? Thanks for the great comments.

I think whatever you choose will be fine. I'm having trouble lately coming up with any ideas to write, and I'm doing a poor job of it. Hopefully, my "muse" will return soon. 8-)
-
I think you are doing great with Potlatch. I have reviewed and reviewed today and I'm still 72 messages behind lol It could be a LONG month!! lol I swear I'm catching up on that Lauranelle!
-
Thank you for the compliment. I really do appreciate your support. I wish it hadn't been the same month as National Poetry, but there it is.
Take your time. We all know how things can pile up. 8-)

Two for one Kim. Gosh I would have separated them over two days. I'm one that complains about winter, that's why I now live in the tropics. Love the cheeky ending on your seasons epigram, and I can understand where you're coming from with you political one. I think pollies think they are a bit more special than the rest of us, but I do hope that -poetic justice is a bitter pill - for them.
Well done,
cheers,
valda

Hi Valda,
I wanted one that was proper, and my Almost one got too long for me to want to pass it off as a true epigram lol So I came up with the Seasons one, too. Thanks for the fun review. Since I'm facilitating Potlatch in May, I was thinking we might try a suite of the short ones, what do you think? I thought it might be fun. :)

I'll start practicing then and might get one in NaPoWriMo. You'll be the boss so it'll be your call. fine by me.
Comment from Apostle Janos
I thought epigrams were burial poems. You don't say! So I would guess you are for single-payer healthcare then? I agree with you on winter being better than summer. Wearing fewer clothes helps, but only up to a point, while in winter you can always put on more clothes, am I right? Politicians stink everywhere, pay them no heed. I have no more 6 star reviews and it is a sort of ephemeral poem I can only give it 5*. I did enjoy it though, I've been following the US political issues for some time now and it gives me an additional perspective on them.

Hi Apostle Yannaras:
Epitaphs are burial poems. I'm for healthcare that makes sense for everyone. What I vehemently don't agree with is the politicians crafting a bill that will apply to virtually everyone in the country except for them. I feel like they will do a better job representing our interests if they have to live under the same yoke. I don't feel like they should get to live by another standard.
I'm glad you enjoyed my selections. I chose the epigram today because so many of the master poets employed this style that I feel it is something that represents the roots of our poetry today. Thanks for all of your great comments.

Kim,
This is great. Your ideas put into this form are such a commentary on our current situation. I really like the rhymes. Your lines flow smoothly with great messages. The part about passing the bill is so true. I believe that most politicians forget about who they represent one elected. Then it each man for himself. The lines about the skunk are perfect.
The weather epigram is true, too. Good job on its rhymes, flow, & message. Here, we have those that complain that it's too cold in the winter & they hope summer comes early. Then, when it's 108*, they complain that it's too hot & wish for winter.
Good job & thanks for sharing. I love the Wall Street epigram by Poe. It seems perfect for our time now.
Your work is always outstanding in wealth of knowledge & poetry techniques. Mine is usually outstanding in the blowing dirt. Jan

Hi Jan,
Since I volunteered for Potlatch lead in May, I'm thinking of us trying this style. What do you think? We could all have some fun and write a suite of 3 epigrams (the short version). What do you think? I enjoy your poetry, you shouldn't knock it. I just love to read and doing this research makes me happy. I loved the Wall Street epigram by Poe so much that I put it on my profile page today lol Yes, it sure is true today!
Thank you for the generosity of your exceptional review and all of the fantastic comments. I appreciate you!
*hugs*
