Great story in a poem about the old Masters, and you put it in perspective that they too come down to a pile of bones 'memorialized by dust'.
Your italic verses of some of the old masters are both sad, for some, and poignant and reminds me no matter how well known life doesn't always differentiate.
Sounds like Raphael bought it on himself, never mind.
You really did take up Jim's challenge and ran well with it Kim.

I am happy that you enjoyed this poem. I was surprised to learn how some of them ended up in life. Thank you so much for the exceptional rating and comments. It is attributed that Raphael died after a 15 day illness following relations with a Mistress. He neglected to inform his doctor of that fact and died from a misdiagnosed condition.
Lots of interesting reading.

Fascinating theme and wonderful poem, Kim! I knew all the master painters in the separated lines except for George Stubbs. The rhyme scheme filled with internal rhymes is superbly done!

Marvelous work with this one. So many famous and great artisans lie in graves we know not where. Such a sad testament to the beauty they bestow on this earth, to be forgotten when death took them. We remember them but I do find it so sad that many were place in unmarked graves with no mention of who they were and what they did. Awesome work with this one and I enjoyed it immensely. It's funny, I was thinking this as I was reading, every man's philosophical reward is the same. But it would be nice to leave a legacy, I guess that's why we write. And I think you've done well with this variably rhymed in varied stanzas and generally iambic pentameter. Beautifully compiled and scribed, an epic of creative writing, well done, blessings, Roy

It's funny, I was thinking this as I was reading, every man's philosophical reward is the same. But it would be nice to leave a legacy, I guess that's why we write. Thank you for picking up on some of the subtleties in this piece. Raphael was one that was rather well off and famous in his lifetime, and died of a fifteen day illness, post coitus with a mistress, an encounter which he neglected to share with the doctor, and which is speculated to have caused his death. He lived long enough to put his affairs in order and bequeath her his money. How is that fair? lol I can't imagine what illness that could be?
And yes, there is still time for your genius to be discovered and lamented ;)

Reading about how several of the Old Masters ended up destitute or whether or not they are even the ones in their graves was really eye opening. A moving poem.
While reading this poem, I was reminded of my own travels in Europe as well the many places here in the United States and seeing historic graveyards.
This poem reminds us to celebrate the wisdom, creativity and the education of the masters of all crafts and professions yet it is the reminder that in death they are mere footnotes laid in the earth.

A moving poem.
