Craig, and you said you weren't good at free verse. Your prosody is superb thus accentuating the use of consonance sucha in "serve only to set you apart in solitude"--the Village. The allusion to those we don't speak of and the illusionary monsters that inhabit the forest are in fact only constructs of the "corrupt" to control the masses. The deception created as a so-called haven thus transformed into a physical and psychological prison. This could certainly be a metaphor for any location or ideology that relies on folklore passed on indiscriminately without "evidence". Human emotions can be overwhelming when manipulated by dishonest people.
Referencing the walls of Jericho also enormously apt to the current political culture we find ourselves within and rejection of the outside world and reality.
There is much to be noodled over in this powerful verse, so in my opinion--this is top-notch poetry!

Gloria, My doctor said that at my age, I need to have my prosody checked every year. Having just consulted my dictionary, I thank you ;-) I really appreciate the kind comments, and the thoughtful analysis. Craig

Wow, you got a lot our of today's word Craig, a really thought provoking poem, which could easily apply quite personally to people inside their ivory towers, or on a world scale as this does. Interesting history in the author's notes certainly added to the enjoyment for me.
cheers,
valda

Thank you, Valda! I'm super-chuffed at your lovely review, as I'm not good at free-verse, and therefore seldom attempt it. But having stuck my neck out, you've made my day by such great comments. Most grateful :) Craig

This is a nice doctrinal and philosophic poem about the state of true feeling of isolationism in a new place; well said, well done; thank you for sharing this with us. Keep writing. DR ALCREATOR
