Wow. Virtual six, Tony! Such striking (sorry for the pun) imagery throughout. Without ever saying what the bells are tolling, you give us hints about the death knoll of soldiers. At least, that's I got when reading. Beautiful sounds in this one. My favorite lines are the last two.

A very well-written free verse poem about the bells in the city hall tower that announce birth ad deaths even wars. When the bells are ringing something.important is happening.

My friend, my regrets for not having a six; I enjoyed this brilliant write with rich vocabulary and superb phrases, "Each widowed word wrung out in grief,"-a perfect posting for the upcoming Memorial Day; thank you so very much.

You have milked these words for all the meaning they are worth in this excellent yet fairly brief free verse on the horrors of warfare, without any of the hideous imagery usually associated with such poetry.

The alliterative play on words told and tolled is an effective foretaste of what is come in the final couplet. Excellent work. I wish I had a six for this.

While we were stationed i n Germany, I loved to hear the bells. They always chimed on Sunday mornings and would often chime throughout the week. Your beautifully written poem brought back that memory. Thank you.

What beautiful wording, and good alliteration. I especially liked 'blacksmith's forge.'

You have a wonderful way with words, Tony, that gives much substance and emotion to your poems.

Oh my I love your way with words...
each widowed word wrung out in grief,
then spread across the world....widowed words..has a chill that wrings the heart.
Good , no great
I'm off to look up carillon
God bless

This speaks how to strike words like bells and each word in different rhyme and rhythm in continuation spread across the world; well said, well done. Keep Writing -- DR ALCREATOR

Cheers, Tony;
-forgive my ungracious rating as I'm out of sixes.
-What bells and where the location of the picture or is that just a generalization?
-I found your poem riveting with praise and acknowledgment and recognition of those who gave their lives for freedom and peace.
-"I like how they returned from the deeds of war, "At length, a few return
on metalled roads, their ears still ring with words and deeds that will be told, and tolled in mournful carillon," Very great verse.
-I really enjoyed this writing in this excellent metaphorical look back at war.
-Thanks for sharing this, Tony, take care and have a good one.
Alex
PS: I believe you are referring to World War I.

That's honorable, Tony, to harness your dreams well enough to acquiesce them into a very well philosophical commentary. I did enjoy it.

Hi Tony, what a lovely anti war poem that speaks to the horrors and trauma that soldiers face all over the world. For every victorious soldier that returns home, there were his "enemies" families that suffer at the loss of a loved one. I loved the intense imagery and phrasing in this write. Excellent free verse.
