This was a delight to read.
This story reminds me of Tim on Tooltime with a power tool!
A disaster did happen. The way with your words is funny. But this did happen.
I'm an ex-sailor, Marines are gun ho! They like anything with a motor.
I can picture the look on your mom's face. A Kodak moment, I suppose and definitely a Thanksgiving you will never forgot.
Guess he never tried that gadget on a turkey before.
Well written. Lived the true story.
Terrific!

Thank you, Boo, for the excellent review and comments. Yes, it was something very similar to ?Tool Time.? I will not forget this if I love to be 100! I wrote this in about 15 minutes yesterday as I was remembering that Thanksgiving. I was in the kitchen making homemade cranberries and I was inspired! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Have a ghostly Thanksgiving!

I loved the story and perfect timing for Thanksgiving. Are you going to cut the turkey with an electric knife?
-
No, I don?t even own an electric knife. I am blind by the way, so carving is reserved for my husband. He does a great job with our carving knife and fork. This year we dined with my brother in law and his gang and he did the honors. He deep fries his bird! Very moist! ??Twas really good! Sal :+)

Happy you had a great Thanksgiving! Best regards. BOO!

Awww, Sal This warmed my heart. What a wonderfully happy story it is. I wish I had another six , I would give it to you. Such a homey story and one that despite actually happening, fI dare say few would repet...especially with the imagery you did. You should write more prose, m'lady. Really. Bless you and yours, always. Bob

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well, Sally. What a disaster.I'm glad though that you could all take with good humour. Disasters like that is always best laughed at as they are really funny. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I hope your turkey will be somewhat less dry. All the best. Ulla:)))

Thank you dear Ulla, and the same to you and yours! Thank you for the kind review and comments. I am glad you enjoyed this snapshot from my past. I don?t think I will ever forget this if I live to be 100! My brother in law is making the turkey this year. It?s typically very moist! I hope your day is blessed with laughter and loved ones!
All my best,
Sally

The picture is so cute. Reminds me of the Charlie Brown Cartoons on TV. :))
My sister and I were donned our very best dresses with stockings-- I think you need to re-look at this chapter. Did you mean..."My sister and I 'had donned our very best...?
This was a good read. You had my mind go off in many different ways as I feared this marine dad and thought, "Oh no... he's going to be mean, angry, and abusive.." But in reality that wasn't it. You had me going. Great job!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. :))

Thank you very much for the review and critique! I changed the sentence already my dear copy editor. I had originally changed that sentence and did not notice that flaw. Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed this!
All my best and special blessings to you and yours at Thanksgiving!

Thank you for sharing this cheerful memory. And you have such a great attitude about being pressed into service! It's a good thing your dad shredded the turkey ahead of time!

Hi, Sally,
Your Thanksgiving of 1967 was certainly one for the record books. I, too, had an interesting Thanksgiving that year. It was the first year my Dad was gone 'on his adventures,' and my Mom was doing her best as a single parent.
The most memorable part of the day was that my big brother consented to me bringing home of the tiny kittens in my aunt's barn. 'Penny' was to be my constant companion for years to come.
Thank you for sharing your memory. 'Rub-a-dub, indeed.'

siblings single handedly. - edit suggestion
We had started life over many times as a broken family. - removed 'had' in this sentence. It can read well without it :)
My sister and I were dressed in our very best dresses with stockings, hair done up or in my case...at least brushed out and tucked behind my ears. - edit suggestion
My sister and I donned our very best dresses and stockings. Our hair was done up, or in my case, brushed out and tucked smoothly behind my ears.
yaaaay(,) God!"
"Thank you(,) Sal(.) Let's eat before it gets cold."
Oh, now this was a fun trip down memory lane. We have one of those gadgets, too, LOL. But, never has there been turkey shards ejected from the tray, hehe. What an awesome story to share with the grandkids. I made a few edit suggestions. Nicely done and thanks for sharing this well crafted memory with us, Sal!

Hello Sally. I have never really been at a Thanksgiving dinner but reading your story made me kind of "being there" in 1967. You are a natural story teller and your words flow and engage and take you in. This piece is hilarious and serious and tradition-oriented and expecting... the best outcome. Thumbs up!

The Canadian Thanksgiving is always in October. But having no family I do not celebrate it. Those who have families do.
Have a great week.
-
You need to adopt me and me you! I consider you my dear Canadian friend here at FanStory. Since I am blind, my life seems to be constrained d becoming smaller and smaller, although I have a large family. My kids are all over the place. I own a company here in my city and that has taken a back seat because of my eyesight decline. My writing has taken off and is a real joy for me.
-
Yes, adopting one another is a good idea... Your writing sounds to me quite professional apart from being very beautiful. Mine is amateur and was given from God, I had never been a poet previously. I too enjoy FS it gives me a sense of family, and it is so rare to "meet" writers who are also practicing Christians.
