This is very cute. Kids love to be read to and are often impatient to learn to read themselves. Never miss an opportunity to read to your kids, it is so good for them. Well done and congrats on your win. Rox

My granddaughter was the real model for "Sis" in this poem. She is an only child and her mother read to her nightly from the time she was born. When she was four, she became impatient and had to learn "to read those words myself." Many thanks for sharing I WANT TO READ, Roxanna, I am delighted you enjoyed it. Rod

"My sister loves to hear me read, a story in her picture book, and when it's time to turn the page, she eyes me with this special look."
I admit, the picture brings a little flavor but the writing brings a simple clarity that comes alive in the mind all by itself.
"But often she will frown at me, because she wants to read and can't, she recognizes lots of words, but new ones make her cry and rant."
Incredible use of simple language defines in the imagination all that need be recognized to make the heart smile.
"I'm seven sis, and you're but four, you can't just close your eyes and pray, that magically all words make sense, you need to learn a few each day."
I find this writing to be insightful to say the least. How might one lend themselves to the knowledge of this youthful conversation without actually being there? Great imagination or a memory of the past?
"She stamps her foot and glares at me, "No, Pete, I want to know right now, why do I have to wait so long when you are here? Just show me how."
I can envision this strong willed little girl insistent and at the same spewing logic her big brother can't refute.
"I'll try to show you how I learned, if you will listen patiently. And if you practice on your own, you'll soon be reading just like me."
Ah. it worked. As it usually does when a four year old tosses undeniable truth at you.
"I know she'll quickly learn these skills, because she really wants to read, Our daddy says, "if you have dreams work hard for them and you'll succeed."
This is a great read defining a simple setting with great clarity and a believable conversation between a sister and older brother. This is Norman Rockwell only in words. Thank you for sharing

I am so flattered you took the time to read and comment on each stanza. I am especially thrilled to hear you say "this is Norman rockwell only in words." Your comments made my day and the process of writing I WANT TO READ all worthwhile. Rod

Oh how nice the two children are learning from each other. Good parenting seems in vogue with your rhymed verse.
It may be difficult for the younger sibling to sit patiently (... waiting so long ...), but her brother is carefully coaching her. Success will follow.
Good luck in this writing prompt.

I had a wonderful model for this poem--my daughter when she used to read to her brother. Many thanks for sharing my poem, Mark.

As mentioned previously, good parenting (with your own) wins out! My two children are in the same birth order as yours. Now both are reading to their children. In their households, there is likely no mentoring that will occur because of the two years age differential in each family. Between cousins, that is a story to be yet developed.

This is so sweet! I used to love to read to my children when they were little.
The picture is perfect for your words and extremely cute.
Good luck in the contest.

What a wonderful big sibling you are! Reading is fun, reading builds the imagination and takes us on many great adventures to many places.
Patiently, one day at a time your sister will learn.
This is a wonderful poem with very good rhymes. Best of luck in the contest.

Actually, my daughter was the reader I modeled my speaker after in this poem, Sandra. I am delighted you enjoyed it, especially the rhymes. Rod

In my opinion, a charming write, beautifully constructed for children, and I am certain will be appreciated in the read to them by the adults in their lives. The rhyming rhythm flows smoothly and is easy in the read, another source of delight - fully compliant with the prompt. Best of luck in the contest...
