I love the simplicity in this and the genuine love between father and daughter just trying to do their best in the absence of a woman they also loved. Your rhythm and rhymes are seamless; nothing felt the least bit forced. You never disappoint. xo

Hi Rachelle. Just trying for an authentic capture of my nurturing dad. From the heart always helps. xx

I think my heart is permanently attached to my sleeve. Gets in the way sometimes when I want to wipe my nose!

This is a warm and endearing write in tribute to your Father and the fond memories you have of him, the gift he left you reminding you of his kindness, a well rhymed and deeply emotional poem, lov Dolly x

You've summed it up well, Dolly. I didn't want it to be mushy, just sincere, like how dad was.

It sounds like your dad was a wonderful single parent. It is a beautiful pearl and is perfect for the wedding dress. It must of been hard for your dad to walk you down the aisle.

Good luck and keep writing

Dad and I were very close, but unfortunately he couldn't be at my wedding. I married in another country and Dad was in poor health and could not travel. Eventually I persuaded him to come and live with me for the last 8 years of his life, with Alzheimers (which was awful because he soon did not even recognise who I was.)

I am sorry about your his and your suffering through Alzheimer's and his death. My dad died before I got married so my brother took me down the aisle.

Hi there,

I loved this. Sadly I have no sixes left. I never use all of mine in a week. this is a first for me. I rarely read poetry but this is very good.

All the best. I hope this wins.

This was a good read, LisaMay. It's great to read a story like this where the father left no doubt in his child about his love. Nice job and good luck in the contest.

I think Dad knew he needed to reassure me because I was adopted and insecure.

Hi Lisa,

Awww, this is such a sweet poem about your dad. A great love poem contest entry. I like "molten moon" to describe your beautiful pearl. Good luck and thanks for sharing. Jan :-)

Thanks very much, Jan. I felt quite inspired and close to Dad when I was writing this, like he was looking over my shoulder.

This is a lovely tribute to Dad who, though lost in grief himself, was able to teach and guide his daughter. I especially like your description of him in stanza one and the description of his gift in stanza four. A solid entry to this contest. Rod

Dad really liked that poem Invictus, so I referenced it in stanza one. Thanks for your review, Rod.

INVICTUS may be my all-time favorite poem. I loved to teach it. Rod

Another of my Dad's favourites was Kipling's "IF". Dad told me to pay attention as it was for girls as well as boys. To me it is very similar to "Desiderata"... go placidly etc.

Congratulations on such a well-written and heartfelt poem about dad. Dads' and daughters have close bonds and it sounds as if your's was a great one. Loved your poem written from your heart.

Hi Aussie, thanks for reviewing. You are so right about the dad/daughter bond. My dad died 20 years ago and I still miss him. I looked after him for the last 8 years of his life... he had Alzheimers. Mum died in 1969 when I was 15 so dad and I were really close.

Happy Easter Kiwi. Yes, my dad was so close, had my back and my heart too. Passed in '88. I still talk to him when I am down. Kia Ora friend.

This is beautiful and moving.Your Dad (if this is true) sounds like a wonderful man who knew how to overcome his own sadness to look after you.
Good luck in the contest.

Yes it is true (except for the photo). Dad was my adoptive father and we were very close. I looked after him for the last 8 years of his life; he had Alzheimers. Mum died in 1969 when I was 15. Dad never remarried. A few days ago I posted a poem about my birth mother and it was rather bitter, so this poem is an antidote to those feelings. It was my birthday a couple of days ago so this family stuff has percolated to the surface. All these emotions still, and I am 66!!
reply by Heather Knight on 19-Apr-2019
I think it's normal for those emotions to last a lifetime.
It's very sad to lose your mum at such an early age, but you were lucky in your adoptive father.
Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, my mum has it too.
    Take care.
