That was brilliant. I felt goosebumps when he reached out for the dead soldier's hand for comfort. No matter whose side they were on, they were both children of grieving mothers. Excellent contest entry, you have managed to bring out the fear and the emotions that this soldier was trying to keep in check. Superb. Good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

Very good poem - very sad story. I cannot watch war movies for this reason - when I see soldiers falling and struggling to live, I think "this could be one of our sons or my husband or brother". All the movies they've glamorized about war. It is awful and defintely not gallant in the end.
Good poem to make us think.

This should really be categorised under poetry as it's entered into a poetry competition. Some folk get very annoyed when the wrong category is chosen as it's easier to promote higher in the prose, but does a disservice to the prose writers who struggle to get many reviews anyway.
The poem itself is a good one. Flow is very well maintained throughout and it is well-constructed. If I was reviewing this as prose - which it is categorised as- the punctuation would need serious attention but even I'm not that harsh ! lol

I see what you mean! I had this happen in another poetry contest. I tried to change the category, but it won't let me :(
Anyway, I'm glad you didn't rate me down for grammar, bc if this was a prose entry, I'd be lucky to get a 2 for it lol! Thanks for pointing that out, but it can't be changed for some silly reason, as happened in the other contest grrrr

My apology for not having a six. As a soldier long ago I relate to this write in one sense. I find a heaviness within me and a spark of fear that was smothered away years ago. I see smiles on my grandchildren's faces as asking questions, was it worth it? You betcha, and the heaviness melts away.

A very poignant and raw poem which does indeed capture the elements of honour, duty, fear and loss by the soldiers on the battle fields and those at home mourning their loss.
The sombre tones in the grey/black image mimic the situation to perfection.
Quite an achievement.

Your evocative and chilling poem captures the horror and loss in warfare that is inflicted on the participants of both sides, and also on their grieving families, particularly on mothers. Trench warfare would be absolutely ghastly, as you have managed to depict so realistically here.

Thanks so much LisaMay, I'm glad you enjoyed this. I think it's important for us to remember what members of the military went through in wartime, as well as to honour their courage.

I agree. Their suffering and courage should never be forgotten. We may not approve of war, but those who have to be involved in it on behalf of our country deserve respect and our thanks. It is the politicians who make the decisions who have to be judged.

This is deserving off six stars, but I have used them all.
We have to wonder what goes through the young minds of those who have to kill another. I believe this is what causes our returning heroes to develop PTSD.

Thanks so much Willie, for the thought of awarding six stars, and your comments. I think it is a major result of war really; young men sent to battle who'd normally never hurt any living thing being asked to kill. The memory of that would cause PTSD, let alone other things they see in battle. Thanks again!
