Wow such a beautiful poem, I can feel it comes from the heart. Your ending is actually an open invitation to honor the braves who gave us freedom and a better life. I really like this part:"we are all soldiers/once, and young, but/war destroyed our youth."

You have hit the true tragedy of war on the head with a well-done poetic hammer. Nothing can truly prepare the young for war. They go as youth and return as old men and women. I always wondered why people thought it odd when I said "Between you and me and the gatepost." Being a military brat, I guess I picked it up from the Aussies. The places where we were stationed people had no idea what I was talking about. Oh well! Learn something new everyday. LOL!

I like poems that rhyme and have a regular rhythm so this was right up my alley. You've said it like it is. Being an Australian, I know about 'you, me and the gate-post'. I had a great-uncle that went to WWI and came back badly shell-shocked and with the most terrible stammer. War is a terrible thing. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you JudyE! And I'm sorry about your Great Uncle. My Grandfather on my dad's side also fought in WWI. He came back a different man apparently, and also suffered physically, dying from cancer eventually. War sucks!
