There was another book about two young children. Have I missed it or has it been put on hold?
Comment from Cass Carlton
Yes,I'll be following this story from the beginning to the end. Your text is very easy to understand despite being filled with the flavour of localised language. This should be an interesting story set in the time of WW1. Not many stories are set in this era, as it is usually WW2 or the Viet Nam conflict.
I will enjoy watching as these characters emerge and grow under your skilful penmanship. It is delightful to see such an interest in bringing long departed family members return to life. Well done cheers Cass

Your story is off to a great start. The characters are well-defined so far,
and the historical references to World War 1 will add great significance and provide some interesting but sad storylines. I love the 'down home' setting and speech.
(I love muscadine wine.) 8-)

Looks like this story will be another best seller. The mountain talk suits me fine, and I like reading this story aloud just to get back in the groove of southern talk.

I have been to those mountains and could feel how special they were through your words. You managed to "sneak" in key details - such as the age of Elsie Mae without slowing down the story.
It did not take away from my enjoyment of your story but I did momentarily wonder if "consequences" would have been a word someone living in the backwoods during 1917 would have used.
Looking forward to next chapter to see if the lovebirds get hitched.

This first chapter is well-presented, Cathy and Bill. The information provided at the beginning about the characters and setting sets a great tone for the mindset of readers. The note referencing the dialect is perfect--I love the way that speech is authentic. It is an added bonus to reading your story--makes the characters come alive and is so believable.
The first few paragraphs give readers much insight into Grandpa's personality in a great way. Readers can see he is the 'real thing.' He says what he means at all times.
I love the way the story gets right into the circumstances of the war and Lester's determination to join and desire to marry before he leaves. I believe the men who left to fight needed that constant of a wife/girlfriend as the were about to embark on a life-changing experience. Thinking of them back home while they were on distant shores would give them strength that what they were doing is the right think for family and country. In the horrors of war, there is that glimmer of a positive note of their love awaiting back home.
When Lester meets with Ellie Mae's father, their exchange sounds true. I can see both men as they are talking. I love the way you describe Lester--shakin' and quakin' all over. I believe Mr. McIntyre enjoys spending time with Lester and has his mind made up before Lester leaves to complete chores. However, he doesn't want to come across to eager to agree. I like what he said about how husbands though. Times, like the one this story is set in, were so different that today. Marriage at a very young age was accepted.
The book cover is beautiful and reflects the country ways of moonshine well. The colors are perfect too. The cliffhanger will entice readers (me) to return. I like the 'about the author' at the end of the chapter rather than the beginning.
Thanks for sharing an excellent start to an awesome story told as only you and Commando do (and will).

Love your story Bill and Tootie. It's written in a believable speaking style. I'm glad you're writing these stories. Not only is it good for Bill to have his family history written down, but gives us a window into the Smoky Mountain Folk subculture.
Take care my friends,
Rhonda

HMM, now I am wondering of Lester will get permission to marry Elsie Mae. I have a feeling he will get it or else the story is pretty much finished. Of course there could be an interesting twist.

This is the beginning of a very promising story. It's well-written, interesting Your characters, their dialogue is very realistic. Your characters come to life in the reader's mind. I look forward to reading more. I do have a question. What happened in the Bill and Cathy story? Did I miss the end?
