I admired your soldiers soul speaking out about the sacrifices made in name of war. I also especially liked your "cross of stone" metaphor. You might consider the following edits: "that" instead of "for" and a period after "give" in line 1; a period after "mankind" in line 3; "resolution" and a period after "liberty" in line 4; a period after "history" in line 6; a semi-colon after "learned" and a question mark at the end of line 7 and at the very end.
11/12/10--I appreciated your edits. Well done- Joan
I would be pleased to re-read your work if you make revisions--just let me know and I will also revise my rating.

I am a 58 year old Viet Nam veteran and I only wish that by some act of enlightenment by all of us who fought there, would have resisted the call to arms and let the war makers do the fighting, killing and tortuous deeds. If there are no solgiers to do the dirty work, there is no war. I respect your spirit and found your prose very well written, but i disagree with your premise other than hoping to learn from our past mistakes.I feel no honor in being a killer. Tony

This piece is rich in conviction,( even if biased) and this runs throughout the poem and inspires the reader to keep faith with the authors passion and position on war.
However the poem does not call out to the man who cares not about war nor does it employ any vivid appeals to people who have a different opinion about the human sacrifice it costs to make a hero.
This rating does not count towards story rating or author rank.
The highest and the lowest rating are not included in calculations.

I found your poem haunting, reminding me of all those soldiers still out there. I had to read it several times to clear up the confusion that I at first felt. I like the question you raised in the end...one we surely cannot answer.

Great message. Very important considering the feelings many have about our soldiers now. Although they say they oppose the war not our guys fighting it becomes hard to distinguish the difference. Great imagery.

The picture you paint in my mind as I read this poem is one of a soldier hoping tha his sacrifice will not go unnoticed by those who are still around. It pulls at my heart as it dose a lot of people who know people who are fighting for us. BRAVO!!

This poem is beautiful and moving, with a great deal of thought intertwined in it's verses. I read it more than once trying to make sure I really understood it. Very well done.

Beautifully written and poignant. We need to be reminded of these facts very often as while we are enjoying our safety we tend to forget the sacrifices that are being made for that privilege.
