Sorry I am out of sixes. This was scary and perfectly describes the effects of drug addiction. Someone described fentanyl this way - needing it after just one use to avoid the pain. The metaphor of the snake makes me think of how the serpent lured Eve to sin. And I feel that drug addiction is the demon possession of today - the evil one uses it that way.
I'm so sorry to learn that's how your sister died.

Your words have deeply affected me, Helen, as they carry a striking resemblance to Kelly's. Of my three siblings, she was the only one to struggle with addiction. She was also the most religious, by far. I admired her faith from a very young age, and her passing led me to my own, in a sense. Her addiction developed after being prescribed anxiety medication when she was far too young. Ultimately, it led her to turn to heroin. I now know in my heart what she always suspected to be true - she spent her life fighting a demon that was misdiagnosed as severe "anxiety."

That's so hard! We will never know until we get to Heaven which attacks were physical and which were from the evil one but we can always pray for spiritual protection. I wish that someone would have taken Kelly to a prayer meeting where people could pray loving healing over her. There is so much self condemnation with drug addiction. We had one man who was an addict on the streets and he came to church and was prayed for. He's been clean ever since.

Drug addiction is one of the things that Satan the Devil uses to ruin people's live. In the Bible Satan once masqueraded as a snake when he seduced Eve into committing the sin that doomed mankind. My oldest daughter succumbed to death by drug addiction. She would go to jail, serve her time, come out and become productive. That is until some setback would occur, almost always betrayal from some man she trusted. The last time was the last. She died as a result of an overdose of cocaine.

Nomi, thank you so much for your review. My heart breaks for you. Though I did somewhat maternal over my sister, I couldn't even begin to imagine losing a child. And having two daughters of my own (still very little) the thought is too much to bear. I am so very sorry, you and your family are in my prayers.
Xo

I do have another daughter, a gran daughter, and a great grand daughter. However, my deceased daughter was the most engaging of them all, we fought at times, but only over her resistance to try and fight off the allure of the drugs.

Addiction is a very destructive thing. I have never seen addiction to alcohol, where it cost peoples lives, but I do know that had I not decided at 19 years of age that I did not want to drink anymore. I avoided becoming a person who was addicted to alcohol. Patricia .

Addiction is the cruellest of conditions, definitely like a venom or cancer feeding on its host. Your beautifully composed verse captures the horrors of this which must have been so painful for you, not least because the beast has too strong a hold and will simply not let go of someone you love with all your heart. Thanks for sharing, Jess. Take care Debbie

There are many forms of addiction, I was addicted to smoking, drinking, (both physical) and gambling, worsened by drinking, only God could break the cycle. Beautifully written Jessica, I like the meter, similar to the last three metered lines of the limerick, blessings Roy
Forced rhyme (curving)
You're deserving. Or (I'm observing) or from which you never swerved.

I know this had to be hard for you to write. I've known a few people who suffered from addiction. It's a horrible thing, but something they have to do themselves. The only way we can help to pray for them, which is a lot. Thank you for sharing.

I love the metre here, the rhymes and the sentiments Jessica. Addiction has a terribly strong grip over us and those who suffer cannot let go of its vice. A powerful and well-worded post from a talented pen, much enjoyed, love Dolly x
