Effective poem that sounded like the lyrics of a country western song, as you stated in your notes. I loved how you played with the phrase "hold on." This serves as the dying heartbeat in your poem of loss.
One suggestion. "love between us has grown old" sounds smoother than "gotten old."

When both the partners know that their romantic relationship is short-lived, there is no point in holding on just for the sake of it. Love can last long even when the tie is snapped but mere romantic feeling surging because of expediency would subside sooner than later. As you say, it would be prudent to give up in such cases.

It is always easier to give up than to hold on and carry on. Find something else to hold on after losing everything is not easy, but a person must find a reason to carry on.

We can all relate to this song, Brett. A love is gone, we get lonely. One night stands can't substitute for the real thing, no matter how much we want them to.
Givin' up is the easy thing to do when there's nothin' left to hold on to.

As I was reading this I thought, "This could be a good song." And then you spoke of them as lyrics. I hope you can get it done. I also value the free-verse as I do only that.
