Hi Mikey,
I think I have the gist of it. I hope you don't mind but I copied and pasted for future reference. I mat need to read this a couple of times. I'm a bit slow on the uptake. Your explanation is the clearest I have heard it explained before. I think some more professional writers don't realise that even the basics are difficult if you do not understand the lingo.
Well done, a very helpful read.

No, I'm honored you find it worth copying. :))
I always try and take things and translate them to English. Once I understand it in English, then I can add the fancy terminology later and it's much easier to get then. Wow. I'm so happy this helped. It helped me to write it. THanks so much, mikey

Great job, Mikey. You nailed the definitions and showed examples in an easy to understand way. The only thing that was a little confusing was the second person. But then second person is a confusing tense to write in anyway.
You've done great for only joining Fanstory a few months before I did.
I remember how much you used to apologize for your stories. I don't think you ever needed to do that. They were always entertaining. And that's the main thing.
Great job. A very entertaining and informative read.

Hey, thanks so much, Mike
I feel like we're learning in our little group. Yeah, second person is a strange thing. I think it's used in computer games a lot. "You're on an island, you're out of food, zombies are attacking, you're only hope is to reach the caves etc."
Check out the Challenges forum when you get a chance. It's our little volunteer group. We do weekly challenges and work on forms and stuff, poetry and prose. It's pretty cool. mikey

GOod explanation, Mikey. I would NEVER use third person unlimited, what you are calling omniscent, since it's frowned on by every editor and no wonder. Who can follow a story from everyone's pov? I have a hard enough time with one pov at a time. You should never jump back and forth between diff persons' pov. That's a rule FS has lived by since I got here, and I don't expect it to change.
Just becasue something is POSSIBLE, does that make it a good idea? Not to me. And this last Prose Potlatch was a good example of what CAN be done but should NOT be done. :)

I can see as I'm writing some of the challenges that it isn't the most practical thing. But I do appreciate knowing how it works and learning it's a good thing that I can apply to the more sane POVs, not that I use sanity all that much. LOL
I'm hoping when we do some more conventional things I'll be a little sharper at it. I think so. We'll see. :)) mikey

Btw, THIS week I actually remembered to set may alarm. Good thing, too. No reminders. :)
-
I always remember at one or two in the morning. Jeesh. I'm going to figure out how to set an alarm or reminder on my computer. I was up all night one time trying to contact poor Sandra seeing if she had a way to contact you. LOL
She probably thought I was crazy. Well, I'm sure she suspected. I guess I confirmed it. People are mad for Rispettos. Whoo Hooo. It's going to be a crazy day! :))
-
All's well. But you CAN message me in wee hours of night. I stay up very late. Besides, I'll see it in the morning. I don't have to set my alarm until Saturday, actually, but Friday is better cuz it's safer.
Off to bed. Good night.
-
Oh, good. Sweet dreams.
Don't forget your alarm. :))

Wow that is all I needed, someone to speak to me in English, not the mumbo jumbo of the well educated that only speaks in their language not realizing there are lower human beings that don't have a clue. There my rant is done and thank you for skipping over the part from the work 'English' to the word 'clue'.

Hey, we need to have a few drinks see what this stuff looks like and hear it in English. LOL
We're on the same page. I think we learned a lot. This is pretty complex stuff that a lot of really experienced writers have trouble with, so we are waaaay ahead of the game. :)) mikey

Let me begin with an inappropriate comment. I love you, brother Mike. I'm sure I will be criticized, envied, and feared. All I care about is you and how uncomfortable I can make you. LoL
Okay, seriously now, one of the many things I love about you is how good you are with your craft. You are an amazing extremely talented writer, yet you don't take yourself too seriously, I love way you make fun of yourself to make other people feel okay about learning something new. You are a compassionate kind person and never judgemental.
Here you taught me POV in less than 500 words and in a way I can understand. I'm like you. I need to apply my learning to the practical things I do in my daily life. I don't learn with a lecture type of instruction.
Unfortunately, the education system in America is based on lecture type of education. School was a huge challenge for me until I got older and I discovered tutors and learning labs in collage and later on in universities. My bachelor's degree was a huge accomplishment for me.
Why am I telling you all these things? Because I want you to understand how much I appreciate you and the forum's challenge chat room. The volunteer base classes and practice sessions you all have are extremely helpful to me. I can ask questions, take notes, and practice in a nonjudgemetal environment and at my own pace. Everyone I met so far has been kind and helpful. THANK YOU!
The way you explained POV in this short but packed of information essay helps me tremendously.
Luv ya sweetie pie.

I'm too insane to be uncomfortable, that's why guys twice my size won't mess with me. They figure if I'm not afraid I must know something they don't. WHOOOOOO!
I'm so delighted that this is a help. THIS is how I need to learn stuff, the way we're doing it in the threads. I need to see it and talk about it in ENGLISH. The jargon goes right over my head. Once I figure it out in English, THEN the jargon comes easy. Dig that this helped. I'm so pleased. Luv ya back, mikey
-
It did help me, sweetie pie. If you had been my professor in higher education, my bachelor's degree would have taken me two years instead of ten. LMAO not true. You know what I mean.
Once I understand a concept I'm a quick learner. The American education system has failed us, brother.
Luv ya. I'm so glad my affection doesn't scare the shit out of you. LMAO most American boys can't stand my heat. ;)
In Spain We have a term for men like you..."chiquitito pero maton". LoL
I luv ya, Irish brother from another mother.
Marival
Ps. What time is potlatch today?

Thanks for another fine post that I'm sure will help make understanding POV a little easier for some of us. Great job. I enjoy reading everything you post, but since I figured you must be really far behind or just don't have time for us most recent reviewers, I've backed off reviewing all your posts. But please don't think for a second it's because I enjoy them any less. Great job. :-)

Hey, Ric
You've got it, I'm in quicksand. I am reading everything and somehow I will catch up. Probably just going to stay up until I'm done at some point. I just stopped posting except Potlatch for now. Like you, the real world is intruding on my fun.
I loved your sunshine/moonshine piece and still laugh out loud all of a sudden and no one knows what I'm laughing at. Awesome little piece. You've had a couple top prose pieces too. Maybe I'll pop by and review still when I get caught up a bit. I did read them. You're writing better than ever. Glad you liked this. Trying to put this jargon in English. mikey

I enjoy every thing you write. You have a style all your own, the thing that many of us wannabes will never accomplish. I'm sure this post simplified POV for many of us. Great piece! :-)

This article or lesson even. Was a treat. I sort of understood what was meant in the various PsOV, but this made everything crystal clear and in an amusing way that encouraged one to read to the end. It also encouraged me to consider -- only consider, mind -- joining in next time.
There is a rear window sticker going round that says "If you can read this thank a teacher." Perhaps there should be another saying "If you want to to read this, thank them again."
Typo here. "What's (knew) [new], Mary?"

This is very good, Mikey, and from the picture, I see you've checked out info on the web as well. There is a wealth of information there--all free.
By George or Gman or Russell, I think you've got it, my friend. Click! and it suddenly all came together. Right?
This is a terrific post with excellent examples.
I hope your invitation to join the Prose Potlatch Challenge/Learning Group attracts interest members. They don't know what they're missing!

A very well written informative piece on POV. It is not easy for everyone to write prose, I also have trouble with tenses and other grammar issues that I have to concentrate on. It is best to keep it as plain and simple as possible at the beginning, to get the feel of it. The trimmings can come at a later stage when confident in what is expected. Thank you for the insights and good examples you have given.
