I think everyone needs a hero. Both boys and girls. If you need Wild West characters there are Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane for us l'il ole females.
Our heroes or idols could also be lawmen or doctors.
Congrats on wining the contest.

"Little Boys and Heroes", is an extremely well-written and heart-warming piece. As this talented poet so rightly points out, all little boys need heroes. To me, this is a six, but unfortunately I'm not given enough of them. I look forward to seeing your next post.

Thank you for your kind review and stars.

I enjoyed reading your poem. It was like Saturday morning with Sky King, John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Even as a girl, I enjoyed those shows.
Good luck!

This is an exceptional 'western poetry' contest entry. Great title and a perfect choice of artwork (I absolutely loved John Wayne).
I really enjoyed how you described what makes a cowboy a hero.
I especially enjoyed the theme of your poem ... 'all little boys need heroes', someone they can look up to.
I grew up on Westerns; I do wish Hollywood would make more Western movies.
Best wishes for the contest!

I'm with you, It is almost impossible to find a good western. Have
you seen "Hostile". It made last year and it is a good western. thanks
for the review and stars.

How true, there isn't any real heroes to look up to anymore. Not having John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott, and Audie Murphy to look up to anymore has really hurt the youth of America. Good luck in the contest.

There were so many western heroes when I was a boy. When I played
cowboy, I thought I was every one of them. Movies were clean family
fun. Now, our children are subjected to sex and violence. Thanks for the five stars.

When I was young, Westerns were the movie of choice and there was one every weekend at the local cinema.
I picked up one spag:
A cowboy with pearl Handled pistols,
That rides a very fast steed. - 'Handled' should be lower-case and 'pearl handled' hyphenated.
Good luck in the contest.

Just voted for this in the contest. Liked it. But I noticed a typo in the first line: a period and comma. I think either might be done, but not both. As Willie says, My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys. No matter how much they disappear because of modern times, I believe the idea of the American cowboy, and what he stands for, will always be in our hearts. As Toby Keith sang, I Should've Been A Cowboy, but I would've never been tough enough. Still, cowboys are COOL!

Oh, yeah, who can resist The Duke with that swagger and that True Grit legend that follows him everywhere -- a wonderfully, nostalgic look at the old-time heros of Hollywood! ;) Thanx for sharing and best of luck at the polls! ;) ;)

Thank you for your review and five stars. The "Duke" has always been my hero. Who better?
Comment from RodG
You are so right. Boys need their heroes and who better than a Western hero the likes of Wayne, Cooper, or Scott? I especially how you describe that hero in stanza four. Although your rhythm is a bit uneven throughout the poem, I really like the content.

Thank you for the five stars. When I was a boy, we had lots of silver screen heroes. Not so much since the Duke passed.

My pleasure. Rod

Alas, there are no Western heroes left. It's a genre that has grown stale.
But I still writer Westerns, and hope a new generation might revive the classic tales of Grey, L'Amour, and McMurtry.
Best of luck with the voters.
Peace, Lee
