I like this verse with the apt descriptions of cold... poured hot chocolate already slushy... that is a good one. Well done on the examples of coldness and the nice hearty.. hot food... menu at the end. Well done, Jim.

Dear friend! Thank you, I find a need a bit of levity to pass these Covid wild days.

I like your poem. Beginning with a sound image like "squeak, squeak, squeak" is so refreshing as most writers (probably myself included) tend to lean too much on sight images.
Speaking of sight images, however,
"Imagine it so cold...
that the just poured hot chocolate
is already slushy"
is a strong one. I like the hominess of the last stanza, as if you are talking with a friend.
Nice job.

Spicy chili and cornbread... ummm, ummm. Sounds great. Those of us who live in the northland are in for some frosty days and nights. Well written and I enjoyed reading it. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn, I know when I see that we are going to highs in the 40?s and 50?s and lows in the 20?s, you folks up north are in for a bad patch.

I think that you wrote a well written and great poem! It is perfect for this winter season. "I love the line "Imagine that it is so cold that the just poured hot chocolate is a slushy." Now that's cold weather! Your poem is a perfect description of the artic. Great poem and thank you for sharing!

Corn bread and chili are good at anytime, day or night, warm or cold weather. I spent 20 months in Grand Forks North Dakota, during some of the coldest weather I have ever experienced. The descriptions made during this fine poem, brought back some very unpleasant memories. Good job.

Nomi, my friend, I too have experienced Grand Fork in Mid-January, UGh!

This free verse, Arctic Blast, certainly takes the reader's temperature down just imagining it being cold enough to turn cocoa into slush-in-a-cup. Yes, let's hope the world revolves past this frozen state.

Your free verse poem is excellent--vividly descriptive of the bone chilling type of scene in nature that is lovely to look at--from inside a warm house! Adding of comfort food and drink---nice touch

Wow, I hate to be cold and I had to turn on my space heater while reading your poem. lol
You did a great job with the writing prompt, and your free verse poem flows well and uses plenty of poetric imagery and language to put us right into the middle of winter!
Well done and thanks for sharing!

Sue, thanks very much for the validation.

Your story/poem went deep into my heart simply because of the way your mind works. You give the facts with examples, and then give a great solution--a nice steamy bowl of very spicy chili with some corn bread.

And that is how winter starts wit a little bit of cold and a little bit of snow: Ho, Ho, Ho "Squeak, squeak, squeak,
the snow so cold each step resounds!
The mist from someone's breath
becomes tiny icy crystals at once,
falling with almost a hint of a
tinkle, tinkle as they hit the ground."
