This is a great story if an horrific experience for you both to have. But I love the way the culprit was apprehended. It reminds me of a case I knew in which the burglar did a poo on the floor (apparently mandatory when you're a common thief) and then wiped his bum with his driving licence application! Banged to rights, as they say. Your story is faultlessly expressed, of ideal length with a nice little message at the end. Well done and good luck! Debbie

Thank you, and thanks for sharing your amusing story. I think that tops leaving the jacket. Lol

Your post is well written, but the story is so sad. I had to pause when I envisioned terrified cattle huddled in a corner. How sad and horrible. You are right. There is a God. I wonder what the penalty is for such a crime. I wish you the best in the contest.

Thank you. The culprits were two teenage boys. They had no means to pay, so Des let them work it off hauling hay in the hot summer months. They might have preferred jail time.

You described this story very well, so sad, at first I thought it was some sort of satanic ritual, but they were selling the beef, I feel so sorry for those animals and your husband who had to witness the slaughter.

Thank you. We had a lot of trouble with cattle rustlers. Our land was extensive and it was hard to watch everything all the time.

What a great ending to the tragedy - that was still a tragedy. The men will never, even with restitution, pay the real cost of their damage.
This is a nicely written story. I hope you win the contest.

Thank you. It turned out to be two teenage boys, and Des let them work to pay for the damages. They turned out to be good workers, and I think it was a good lesson for them.

This story grabs the reader and holds attention all the way through. It sets a clear picture of time and place and keeps up the pace just like a mystery thriller. It's satisfying to learn what happened quickly enough that it doesn't get frustrating waiting for the answer. Well done!

Thank you. I agree. I like to read a story that gets to the point without wandering on forever.

Author,
What a terrible thing to have happened to you! I'm glad you got justice.
With some of the dialogue, you should put up a "language" warning.
All in all this a great story.
Good luck,
Cindy

Thank you, and thanks for the tip. I was writing things as they were said, and I think you're right, it needs a language warning. I will edit and correct that error.

Thank you. It was long ago, but I never forgot the cattle rustlers stupidity.
Comment from Sally Law
Oh my goodness, there certainly is a God and He has a sense of humor. I can hardly believe anyone would be that heartless and stupid!! Wow! I'm sorry for your losses, dear, but glad justice was served in the end. Hopefully the cow-murdering thieves got a stiff sentence and we're significantly fined. Where you all awarded any monetary compensation? I hope so.
Sending you my best today as always, and my very best wishes for the upcoming contest.

Thank you. It turned out to be a couple of teenage boys. The father of one of the boys offered Des five thousand dollars if he dropped the charges. We didn't accept the money because Des thought the boys needed to learn they couldn't break the law and then buy their way out of the consequences.

You've shared your story perfectly with the reader, April. Those rustlers got what they had coming to them. Those poor animals were traumatized and, worse, slaughtered by those creeps. I love the ending!!!
Bravo for God and the good guys!

Wonderful story. So glad the thieving scoundrels were caught. What a terrible experience for you and for the cattle. You have recounted the tale well, and I hope it does well in the contest.
