There is still a long way to go before Spring pokes through the snow Paul but I love your optimism and your uplifting words in the couplet. I enjoyed your metre and rhymes and wish you luck with the contest, love Christine x

Thanks, Christine. Do the mountains in the Canary Islands get any snow on their peaks?

Yes, Mount Teide is the highest point in Spain and it has snow during the winter months and it is visible with the naked eye too x x x

This is a beautiful sonnet. Gives us a glimpse of the seasons with lovely scenes to capture the cold of winter and the warmth of summer.
The rhyme and meter is spot on its reads perfectly right the way through. Well done and good luck with the contest.
Best Wishes
Nicki

Thanks, Nicki. My morning walk has been a little nippy this January, but I shouldn't complain. I remember those really cold and snowy winters that I experienced as a kid seventy years ago.

Ours just melted and now to see the beautiful sunlight. The blanket of white was pretty but the warmth out weighs the thought. Thanks for sharing you talent..

Thanks, Charles. We had snow a few weeks ago that melted off in a few days. We had another few inches a couple of days ago that will not last that long. Don't know if we are going to get the big one this winter or not.

This poem, Paul, is a well-crafted sonnet.
The imagery and word choices evoke both the harshness and beauty of winter, making it relatable and visually evocative.
The concluding couplet provides a satisfying reflection that ties the themes together beautifully.
Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest.

Thanks, Tim. The snow is beautiful, but it must be shoveled. I've got a poem about that, and I will post it some day.

Good morning, Paul.

I agree that January hadn't been that bad so far, though recent days here in NJ have been in the teens, no snow.

Great descriptive poem for us to gauge the frigid cold winter and hasten for spring then bounce into summer!

Oh boy I can't wait.

Cheers,
John

Thanks, John. I complain about the cold in winter, and then I complain about the heat in summer. Fall is my favorite time of year.

I'll agree that fall is my favorite season, but I certainly enjoy the summer with my pool, flowers and veggies.

You have described in this sonnet the kind of January we experience where I live. Indeed, we're in Winter's "frigid grip" and like the Speaker I "dream of warmer days." On the other hand, as you point out in your closing couplet, there is a "wonderland of white" out there. Your meter is impeccable and your rhymes well-chosen. Rod

Thanks, Rod. Even though I complain about the cold and snow on occasion, I wouldn't live anywhere else. I love the four seasons.

Our January has been rather frigid though not much snow (knock on wood). You do a great job of making me shiver as I read those first lines. And then you made me smile with

'dreams of warmer days with summer breeze,
Relaxing at the beach, out in the sun.'

And yes, I am already waiting for winter to be done.

One suggestion to consider: You repeat the word 'breeze', maybe switch the first one to 'air'?

Best wishes in the contest!

Maine. Yes, I imagine it is pretty cold, there, and it sounds like you are ready for warmer weather.
You will have a thaw in January? I am surprised.
Here, in South Texas (San Antonio) we had one quick freeze, then up in the 60s and then another freeze expected next week. Up and down, crazy weather.
Your poem is very expressive and I feel sure many people agree with you.

Thanks for the review, Katharine. Quite frequently, we will have a few days that warm up, and we call this a January thaw.
