Excellent write, Sharyn. I was utterly captivated all the way through. You handle the subject of ADHD perfectly (although I have my own theories on it) and the entire scene setting in the classroom is brilliant.
I got quite gooey when you introduced me to Jack. What a yummy guy.
Er, I'd like a follow up, please. There could be so much more to come in this story. Like, do they get together? How does the wee lad do? Does he ever meet Miss Tomato thong again?
Fantastic work.
Bravo.

Yep, didn't spend any till I read it. I can't even say much, as this speaks for itself -- it's a perfect write, and tugs at all the right strings. My son has dyslexia and adhd, luckily we didn't experience anything closely remote to this, but many of my students have. Well done, entertaining, enlightening, fantastical, heart-warming- what a package...

That's a great photograph. Such an emotional pose.
Tommy is a handful. And Miss Victoria Montgomery sure is not teacher material with that mouth. Well... Nutritional supplements like granola bars is a wonderful way to bond. I heard ADD is a growing diagnosis. Good awareness.
This short story is creative and without a doubt very original. Excellent work.
Good luck in the contest.

I loved this piece, Sharyn. You are an amazingly multi-talented person! This is a wonderful story and familiar to me. I tutored a 15 year old boy with a dysfunctional home life and couldn't add 1 + 2. I tutored him for 2 years and learnt that he responded to patterns in number and got him up to beginning algebra when a high school teacher took over.
Your story is wonderful. Sometimes it just takes one caring person to break through barriers. I love your descriptive phrases "vein pulses under her temple like a small epileptic snake". Fantastic!
regards, Jen

Oh Sharyn, what a lovely story. Of course it sounds like the first half of a short story, or the first chapter of a novel. Makes us want to know all about the wedding, and Tommy's adult life as a psychologist, helping little kids learn to read and cope. I'll have to confess I wanted to stand up and yell "YES," when Ms. Jones thwacked Mrs. Mongomery with that book. Nicely done.

Wow wow wow. BEAUTIFULLY written. Such phenomenal metaphors. By that I mean well done And pretty. Tomatoes, dinner plates, like marshmallows should taste, just to name a few. I loved it. I actually have ADD! This was so relatable. I actually acted this way my entire life! Prove them Wrong! My dad included. And... I can't read either! Makes this review simply a good guess honestly. Kidding of course. But seriously, i was treated that way, so sad. teachers have a very important role, very impacting on a young mind. I love this story. This was ME as a child. Mean teachers as well. I really really liked this. You just decided to write this? Inspiration? I'm serious, not just because I know you, this was GREAT, it just touched so close to home, and was beautifully written.

oh lovely!!! I'd hoped you'd enjoy this one Greg - I haven't written anything quite like this one before. My husband and son both have ADD, so it's been an educational few years, believe me - on top of crappy teachers to boot, but, thank heaven, we finally discovered a strange, quirky old ex-lawyer teacher (who just happens to be a fabulous writer!) who didn't pigeon-hole my son and was really able to help him. So there's my inspiration - and my son is now 16 and I'm STILL dealing with crappy teachers! GRRR!
-
Grr indeed! They can be very dangerous. 16 is very impressionable still. Very much so. He needs to have all the confidence in the world. I'm telling you, all my life and at 16-18 especially, the way my dad beat me down (by ignoring me and shrugging me off as if my opinions were "stupid") affects me greatly to This day! Teachers absolutely have that ability too-authority figures. Well if you ever have any needs on an outside point of view on it, I'm here! There is actually a fine line between BiPolar and ADHD they are finding. I might only have one. That would be nice!
-
yes, the more research & study they do, I think they'll find all these things are just a point along a continuum and all pretty well acceptable as "normal" behavior! we're so anxious to pigeon-hole people and label them!

Such a delightful and amusing stories. So funny how the woman topples to the ground. Tells of true events that often happen is schools. You paint the main character with such spunk and rebellion. He's a child scorned with impatience
and intolerance.

There are, unfortunately, many teachers out there who can't handle anything other than a cookie-cutter classroom. The ones who rise above that to listen to every student and to work with a student's differences rather than berate or belittle them are flecks of gold in the river of the educational system.
