War is such a senseless waste of life and when you think about the battle lines that the generals drew up, it makes you see they did not value the life of their soldiers. After all they are not on the front line.

gw: So similar but so different. Youth loved by mothers alike yet wasted in the cold wet shades of gray mud. Leaders in their castles and government buildings don't count the cost of lives. Live in peace. Well written example of war.

This was so unbelievably touching and beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes. I love the way this was separated into the different points of view, that also happened to be much the same. Expresses a very important message. Well done!

Very nice piece, beautifully written, about a war nowadays mostly overlooked. It was devastating in the numbers lost, most to hand to hand combat.
I just came across a thank you note, to my grandmother, from a cousin, who was killed in the trenches in the final days of World War One.

A poem that illustrates well the futility of war.
This is a novel idea to swop the second verse for the German point of view and I think that it works well, with both sides ending up as casualties of the First World War on the third verse.

If somebody could have read the minds of these trench soldiers, what the writer has penned down comes close.
Exposed to the ever-constant danger and uncertainty, these young soldiers will have similar thoughts and questions.
The author has chosen a very fitting photo to illustrate the somberness and despicable situation of the battlefield trenches. As it is, the scene is already very depressing.
What a terrible place to be in - fighting for the Kaiser, King, and country. It might have well been a self-conflict.

If somebody could have read the minds of these trench soldiers, what the writer has penned down comes close.

As a mothe of a soldier, this moved me in more ways than one. I could only imagine the fear of the young soldier and the angst of the mothers as they wait for some news. Terribly romantic and yet gut wrenching. Gretchen

This really does bring home the insane senselessness of war. Two men facing someone who they don't know, who has been classified by someone else as their enemy. The same fears, the same murderous intent, the same weeping families as they go down in the mud, never to rise again.

Excellent. I love the way you have mirrored the exact same thought process in each man's eyes. The short, poetic sentences speak from their hearts. I can feel their hearts beating in their chests. Such a poignant poem, sorry, story!
