Hi Brett, this is a wonderful poem and a timely reminder of those who died in the name of their country and for those of us who are free thanks to them, there are not enough people who remember them these days so thank you for writing this.

Very talented piece of poetry. Your foot notes are intriguing. As one vet to another, you are welcome and thank you for remembering. Not many do, now days. My blessings to you.

13 years Army. Honorably discharged after Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Thanks for your comments, support, and service. Appreciate all of them indeed. Too many not remembering is one of the reasons why I wrote these lyrics. That is something, in my book, that should never happen to any Vet.

Brett,
What a powerful piece. Also, thank you for your service!
My father was an Air Force Sergeant, and truthfully, I guess I've had a bit of animosity in my young life with the military... You know how kids are? Blaming everything except the truth.
My father died just last month, and well... we never really knew him, and sadly, he died alone.
However.... I am so grateful for the military, who is giving him a full military funeral.
This seems a way too personal poem for me... because it hits me in my guilty spots, but hey... we all pave our way, right?
Perfect photo for this piece, I have a few myself I've taken which are similar.
Thanks for sharing a piece of yourself, I look forward to reading more of your work.

Such a sad story, but so true for so many as these wars continue on. I like the first and last stanza being the same. Good work, my friend~Debbie

This is an interesting poem that the author has created with this piece of work. I love the imagery in this picture and the words does the picture justice. It is only right to pay homage to the men and women who serve and give their lives for others. Well done.

This is a good Country and Western song to go with the other one currently showing. Here, you milk the emotion with the fall of an American hero. C&W needs this emotional element to support the ballad nature of the narrative. I really liked some of the imagery going on here including:
so folks back home could sleep in peace
through the Star Spangled night. ..appeal to the flag

but, he left us his memories
of those amber waves of grain...very evocative

The words and natural rhythm of this come over as a genuine C&W song. Well done.

This all too often in time of war is what many children have left. Just a picture on the wall and stories told about their fathers who gave it all to keep us free. Blessings, Patricia

Very compelling poem. It shows us what a child goes through who looses a father to war. This is something that is often left out of stories people tell of war.

It also shows us the sacrifice our men and women in the armed forces make to keep us all free. Nice poem, this should make it to the public. I can see it at a war memorial.
