A beautiful rhyming poem that not only evokes feelings of the joy of reading, but of innocent childhood! The nostalgic artwork contributes to the overall effect of taking a walk down memory lane - before the days of computers, tablets, smart phones and video games. I loved this! Thank you for sharing.

Hi June. Thank you so much for your warm-hearted praise of I WANT TO READ. I fear that audio will replace real reading. I read an article in a THE WRITER magazine today that says audio books are more popular now than print ones. I am delighted you enjoyed the artwork and I appreciate that galaxy of bright stars. Rod

Terrific story in a poem. It makes sense that the little sister wants to do what her big brother does, but she is impatient. I'd guess in about a year, she'll be reading very simple kids' books. Why? She wants to. That's the key to success in any endeavor--wanting to do it! :)

Anonympus Poet, this is a sweet entry for the rhyme contest.

Little sibling, impatient, desperately wanting to learn to read. Hungry to open and read all the secrets held within the books on the shelf.

Well done.

Good luck in the contest.

Best
John

I love that phrase--"absolutely adorable"--describing I WANT TO READ. Thank you so much. If I could paint, I would try to make this into a children's book. But alas! I have no artistic talent. Rod

The pic is simply captivating and the sentiments are equally so -is there any greater joy than reading - let's hope our tecchie culture does not decrease that joy

Hi zanya. I am flattered you think I WANT TO READ is "simply captivating." And honored that so many voters thought so too. Many thanks for your endorsement and those six bright stars. Rod

What a lovely sentiment, encased in a very smooth work concerned with reading, I remember my then 4 year granddaughter's first day at kindy saying, "But I can't write my name yet" I replied "you soon will child." Abpnd Sh can! Beautufully written in tetrametric quatrains and abcb rhyming, well done, blessings, Roy

This is so sweet, and I love the picture. Excellent job with your rhyme. I wish some of the older students were that interested in reading. It opens whole new worlds for them. The little girl is delightful in her impatience about learning to read. Older brother tries to help her and reads to her, but advices her that it takes patience, which it does. Reminds me of when I was sitting in the reading group, eagerly learning to read. Very enjoyable. judi

Hi Judi. I really appreciate your sharing I WANT TO READ and your kind praise. When I was still teaching, I was surprised how many of my high school students did NOT read unless they were assigned books. I taught a writing course called Rhetoric where I required my students to read one book a grading period (9 weeks) in addition to writing an essay a week. I was surprised how many thanked me at the end of the course. Rod

You're very welcome. I'm dismayed by how little reading my great niece and nephew do, and they are college-bound, too. judi

I truly do wish I had six stars to give you! This reads so sweetly like the rhymes I read in my own books many many years ago. The picture looks as sweet as the words, with brother loving on his little sister at their special reading time. You rhymed well, and without making the poem's rhyming standing out at all. Your words flowed into one beautiful story:)

Hi Contest Author,

Ha ha ha! Cute poem. This kiddo reminds me of myself at her age, but I had more patience with the process. I was horrified on day 1 of kindergarten when the teacher announced (proudly) that most of the year would be spent learning the A-B-C's. The other kids couldn't read! Torturously boring year, to say the least. And I wondered WTH they had been doing for the first five years of their lives. Thanks for sharing and good luck. Jan :-)
