What a great story on your grandmother's drawer. I was immediately transported to that drawed with the scent of oak and the frayed postcards. Your style is loving, personal, as if you gave me permission to dwell for a while, in your world.

What a beautiful, beautiful story. It clearly shows the depth of love and devotion you had for your Grandmother. You now have the pleasure of inventing whatever you will of Edwin. I would love to see your image of Edwin that you would create for your dear Grandmother. May she and Edwin rest in peace.

Krylon, once again thank you so very much fro stopping by to read and review my poem. I would have loved to have met him, but somehow I beleive he might not have made it back from the war. I do not know that for sure..but the letters stopped abruptly and the last dated letter asked Emma to marry him. Obviously she did not, for she married my grandfather when she was 19. again thank you so very much..I apologize for just responding..jlsavell

Love your story. You are a fantastic writer
penning words that flow directly from the heart,
expressing true emotions and in this story of
one who laughed, loved and cried as we all we do.
I've discovered so many interesting things about my
family that I never knew, back to 1795. I feel as though
I know them. I do know that in time every day becomes
a day of long ago. Seize the day, let the heart sing.

Hello jlsavell,
Your poem is so gracefully composed along with the beautiful postcards and what was said, especially this part after the writings from which seems was your Grandmother's secret lover.--

Your secrets, my sweet grandmother
Did you know one day I would find?
Yes, of course you did, I was your confidante
But only in your death, you told me secrets

Smiles
Gert

These are fond poetic memories of one that you loved. I found this piece of poetic art to have very good free flowing thoughts with good emotions within those phrases. This was just a delight to have read and written a review for... John

I could write paeons of praise for your heartrending tragic poem. It is what i have kept and preserved--my parents love letters--my passed on son's secrets and my own love letters. All preserved and kept. To be read once in awhile--to shed tears for those departed dearest ones and to again start living in the present. You have written with rare emotion, which can come from only a sensitive and loving heart like yours. And yes i use Lavender too--my mother's fav. perfume. Exceptional my dear. Go d bless you. Hi Jlsavell,
It my first time read it the poetry just like this.
"Letters and diary poetry".
I like the theme that you choose, also the deepest love that you convey. How lucky you had grandmother like Emma.^^
The secret that she gave you from the drawer,
I hope I got once.

Warmest regard, Widhie.

There are things that happen that can affect us the rest of our lives. Sounds like she lost a love during WWI. Many people would get rid of such painful memories and, it's sad, for no one would ever know. I think it's great that she kept them and remembered. Nicely done on this! :)

You have beautiful imagery.
I feel that I am there, opening the musky
drawer, finding those beloved letters.

I especially enjoyed the first stanza:
"Postcards in the drawer, the musky drawer
Aged and frayed with the scent of old oak
Bundled neatly by a red ribbon
These postcards in the drawer, grandma's drawer"

I like how you repeated some of the lines.
It added emotion and emphasis.
I felt that you had proximate rhymes in this poem,
or at least that is how it flowed to me :)
I also enjoyed your alliteration, especially in
these following lines:
"The faint smell of lavender lingers
Mingled with a musky sent of written memoir"

You bring the reader into the room and into
your thoughts as you look through the
cherished postcards.

One thing: sadness that sometime glinted - sometimes

A very nice tribute to your grandmother. - JeJo

Jimi,

This is an excellent poem, with nothing for me to criticize. I don't think any WWI soldier is still alive, since it was almost a hundred years ago. But pain can linger through the years.

My wife's mother, was born in 1901 and passed away in 1990. All her life, she remembered her big sister, who died of tuberculosis in 1918.
