The only thing he had to hang on to was home and family and with that ripped away he has no reason to fight on. She deserves this letter. He remembered all the good times and all the love. Very poignant and probably all too real.

Oh my! How incredibly sad this piece was to read. Well written and shares the pain as well as the love he had for his beloved. Thank you for sharing.

I'm certain that there were many such letters sent during many different wars. I t always seems almost cruel to me to finish in such a way and at such a time.
Your poem highlights the agony suffered by the serving soldier and the possible outcome as well.
Well written and sad.

A very nice poem with a picture that is perfect.
A big part of the appeal is the timelessness of your work. As a retired army officer, you would be amazed at how often this happens when the significant other (not just men) go on deployments. They give their all, then come back to a ruined family. Often, there were problems beforehand that the deployment only made worse. But the least they could do was be honest before their significant other goes into harm's way. I'm sure more than one soldier died overseas in the past few years due to Dear John or Jane letters.
Great effort and thanks for sharing, Brent.

My first thought is to say, " I don't have words". But I have to try. It was one of the most heartfelt and sad poems, I have EVER read. It was amazing! Your word choices bring new meanings to " word choices"... You told a story that I felt like you had wrote this letter to me, I was in your story. You put so much feeling, sadness, and grat detail in this story, it was just beautiful:))

This a poem that pierces deeply. "Heart eloquence," imo, is the main ingredient of the best poems. I see zero flaws here, but I'm most impressed with the heart that wrote this!

I LIKED THE HAPPY MEMORIES AND IT IS EASY TO SEE HOW THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT HIM GOING AND INDEED THOSE HAPPY MEMORIES ARE GOOD REASON TO STAY ALIVE. FIVE YEARS ON THE BATTLEFRONT! HOW SAD. WELL WRITTEN!

This is so touching a poem, with intense emotions of strong character, so noble, a heart-breaking write. Great deliberation of thoughts well expressed in demonstrative language. A commendable read. Thanks for sharing.} Lin

I am sure such instances were quite common when men were away at war. The Great War was horrific, how those men suffered, this was just another blow to their mental state. A letter was a prized possession. Good use of descriptive language and imagery. Hope you don't mind, I spotted an error, Line 12, lives. Enjoyable read, most fitting illustration. Faye
