And so it goes on. Sacrifice is a bitter word yet chivalrous can be named as its counterpart. It seems time does not change, just our versions of it.
A good depiction of an historic event of which I am sure many have either forgotten or know little of.
Best wishes,
RG

This is very well done and reads beautifully. "Thoughts of love was left behind" - might I suggest using 'were here? Nicely done and I thank you so much for sharing this with me.

Well done there lad. I love the message and the depth behind this work. Its gritty, meaty, chunky and has some balls to it. Well done here.

deepwater: this poem probably told me more about WWI than did my grandfather. He talked about WWI but only of the trenches, how in the hospital after being shot in the leg, it stunk from foot smells of other injured soldiers. For his entire life he carried around a picture of his French girlfriend which irritated my grandmother terribly. He went in at age 16 and returned home an old man with the hand shakes which continued for the rest of his life. Thanks for sharing this story. livelylinda

I love this poem. I am a history buff and enjoy any writing that has to do with military history. Have you read any John Keegan? Your poem reminds me of another World War I work "All Quiet On The Western Front."

Hi D - A well written dedication to all who fought in the so called war to end all wars. Appropriate for this time - the centenary of the start of WW1. I like the way you write it as a soldier of that war. Terrible to think after such carnage the next war came just 20 years later. Lessons weren't learned - they never are. Thanks for the read. Regards Dorothy

A wonderful poem about a terrible time. Wouldn't it be great if poems like this didn't exist because they had no reason to? If there were no wars and we all grew not to mistrust each other's differences but instead to embrace them and treasure them as a chance to learn new things?

Well done! Brings the scene to life with the anticipation, sense of duty and how this all culminates in the battle. And the last two lines give credence to the fear men must feel when faced with this. Later, Jim
