Oh, and I'm happy to know, Christmas that year wasn't the disaster it threatened to be {smiles}.
Just one minor point you might like to consider:
the Ladies' Home Journal Magazine cover -- I've never heard of this publication, but I suspect "magazine" wasn't part of its title. If it wasn't, then don't capitalize "magazine".

I've always felt that there is a difference with being happy vs being joyful.
I believe that being happy occurs when good things occur creating happy times but being joyful is much more than that. It is being truly filled with joy in spite of one's circumstances. Your wonderful family were joy filled! Thanks for sharing your lovely story.
