You derived a good moral lesson from this memory. I do think it's a normal child's reaction. I remember telling my daughter that my dad's short tempered behavior was due to his diabetes. She then feared she could catch it. So that's another case like yours. It's a rare child who can see a different one and openly becomes friends with the different one.
Best wishes in the contest!
One question: I can't fix my shortcomings that day, (couldn't?) or did you mean that in the present you can't fix the past?

Yes, I meant that I can't go back in time and fix the past, but you raise a good question. The sentence could have been written more like, I couldn't fix my shortcomings (that day/in the past/when I was a child), but I can (focus on the present). It's worth experimenting with those different variations to see which reads nicer and has more impact. Thanks for asking.

Thank you for your gracious response to my question. You raised a good question about my last post, too. I also edited, hopefully to improve it. Lol.

Your story, "The Same Water," is a powerful reflection on a significant life lesson about acceptance, empathy, and personal growth. The way you delve into the emotions and thoughts of your younger self, juxtaposed with your understanding as an adult, provides a deep and insightful perspective.
The narrative captures the innocence of childhood, the complexities of growing up, and the importance of confronting our own biases and fears. It's a poignant reminder that our actions, or inactions, can have a lasting impact on others, even when we may not realize it.

Clearly, this event made a big impact on you. You'd think the awesomeness of summer, the pool, the arcade all would have been great memories. But it never seems to work that way. It's the thing that made you uncomfortable that sticks with you. In this case, it's a good thing because you have had a chance to take it out, re-examine the situation and how you dealt with it.
This is a well-written, honest look at a tiny event that had an impact on shaping your thinking.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your kind review.
"It's the thing that made you uncomfortable that sticks with you." Right. It's interesting to consider how vivid this memory is compared to everything else. I believe it's because it was a life lesson, and, therefore, in the same memory files as learning to swim. I'm not sure why the arcade is in there, but I work in software, so I guess that technology was important to me as well.

That was a vulnerable post to share. But it's something everyone has gone through at one time or another, especially back in the day of the word that you described the little boy at. Growing up, I was always drawn to the special Olympics and when I was a ripe age of 19, I worked at a School for "special needs" children. Some of those kids were extremely bright. As a grandmother now, I notice my grandkids looking at someone who's a little different than them, and it's a lot easier to explain to them now that they are just like you and me. They have some challenges that we don't have to experience. Good luck in the contest and thank you again for sharing.

Thanks for your kind review. Yes, I did feel a little uncomfortable sharing how I was frightened in that moment, but, hey, we were all little kids at one point.
