Ciao poet, you now have three votes.

It's such a cute pic and I like the creative take.

Mother Nature certainly provides those critters with all they need to survive without cost.

Those automatic food machines were handy if you arrived at a train station at a crazy hour when all shops were closed.

For a couple of years, I took the bus to see my parents who where living in Spain. (later I took low cost Ryan Air which was quicker)

I went by train to Milano and then took the bus to Tossa De Mar,Spain (1000 km )

Every 5/6 hours the bus stopped at a restroom. Most had these automatic vendor machines with sandwiches and drinks.

I don't travel now that my parents have passed away, not sure if they are still around.

Thanks for your review. The Horn and Hardart automat was a precursor to current vending machines that offer mostly snacks and beverages.

I'm not sure we ever had this kind of automat in the UK. So thank you for the notes which help to explain this humorous squirrel's feasting on a banquet of free nuts. He's going to be there forever, storing them in his cheeks (nice image with 'cheeky.') Well done! A great, fun contender. Good luck! Debbie

    Debbie,

It is interesting story you can google. Apparently the automat idea started in Germany. Two men, Horn and Hardsrt started the business in the state of Pennsylvania and then moved to New York City. It was fun putting your nickels into the slot to get your food. Similar to our current vending machines where you can see the products through the glass or plastic window.

It was a big deal as a kid to buy something with the five cent pieces/coins (aka nickels) with money your parents gave you to splurge.

    hi Zanya,

As a kid, likely not yet a teen in the 1950s, it was a big treat to buy your food at the Horn and Hardart automat without your parents telling to eat your spinach or whatever (-; It was similar to our current vending machines but with many, many glass window foods and beverage to choose from.

First, I just really love that squirrel picture. But that's very clever and witty just as the prompt asks the writers to write about. Good luck in the contest. I enjoyed your witty writing.

    Thanks Lana.

Almost all my illustrations are sourced from FanArt so I only take small credit for choosing an artwork that complements my poems, which most typically are 5-7-5 syllabled lines.
