Mikey, this is an amazingly beautiful tribute to Prince. I like it much better than the contest ones with all of the artificially inserted song titles. Yours is a class act, my friend~Debbie

Wow, Debbie. I'm so touched by your words. I wrote this moments after hearing the news and it's almost as if he dictated what to say. I'm honored by your words and wonderful rating. Thanks so very much. mikey

My last six of the week goes to you for this tear-jerking tribute to Prince. Wonderful lines about trying to find the perfect sound or voice. Perfect pacing in this. Wish you had posted a video. I admit to not being that familiar with his work. Guess it's time to visit to YouTube.

Wow. I'm honored. This really was written the moment after hearing the news. I think you'd enjoy his music. Purple Rain at least is a beautiful melody I think. Some of his stuff is a bit out there, but so am I. HAHAHA! There's a couple videos in the music forum. I am truly so happy you enjoyed this. Thanks so much. mikey

To be honest, I listened to several and wasn't impressed. He's great on the guitar. His falsetto is supreme, but his lower range made it hard to hear with all the acoustics in the background. To each his own. I personally think he's transgender.

And we've just lost another one... except we haven't... we will always have a piece of him... many pieces... my eyes cry purple too.
So sad. I sat here yesterday watching youtube on my tv... 60 inches of Prince... (now THERE'S a fantasy ;) lol (that's probably about how tall he is)
this is awesome. I knew you'd love him too.
twins to the end.

Not far from it. 62 inches and I'm heading that way myself as I continue to shrink like the dude in the movie.
I'm glad you liked. This was literally within moments of hearing the news. He almost dictated it to me. Loved yours as well. Lots of great pieces and they all feel like group hugs, yes? mikey

Yes...weirdly, I'm still mourning. It's so odd.
I'm going back in my cave now

you showed me
that the color of the rain
is
purple
and it falls
from my eyes...What an astonishing way to close this, Michael. Tears shed for a lost genius.
I could feel the strong connection you felt for him in the early lines; the musician, the writer of songs, of verse...the communicator that you both are and were.
And your verse flows like cascading tears finding tracks on the page. It recalls the one who needed something beyond the name that was known to us all. A symbol, saying I'm nothing, I'm everything, I'm unique.
And he was. Like Jackson, Presley, Mama Cass, Janis Joplin, Buddy, Jim and big Jim, lives lost to the seedy excesses of fame...and far too young.
The fame becomes the legend.
Loved your choice of colour scheme perfect for the Purple Rain Man. This eulogy is terrific and I hope writing it was cathartic for you.
You get my last sixer for this.

Wow. That's quite a humbling and most appreciated review, Mark
Yes, this was within seconds of hearing the news and it was what I had to let out. He was a major influence on me as a musician and I also found him to be just an interesting cool person. Plus he would have to be younger than me and I'm still deluding myself that I AM YOUNG. Hahaha!
I'm so pleased you liked this. Yes, it helped as did so many of the others. Thanks so much. mikey

Reality smacks us in the face. Even a Prince must die. A tiny, delicate, man, who wasn't a great singer, an average musician, yet when he stepped onto the stage, he became a superhero, bigger than life, and his songs covered us in goosebumps with his special words and visions that filled our hearts to overflowing, morphed by his magical music. Thanks for sharing another of your fine poems. :-)

You've really described it to a tee. He wasn't someone anyone wanted to follow on stage. I'm loving you're tribute and I couldn't add a word to it. Thanks for sharing it and stopping by. A sad day. mikey

Such a fitting tribute to a music legend Mikey. I think in one way or another Prince has touched all of us with his songs.
You used a good color for the font. Purple I think says it perfectly.
Thanks for sharing

A wonderful and fitting tribute M, he was many things to many people and although I wasn't a massive fan, I recognise he changed the face of music and lives on through many millions of people. Now THAT'S a legacy!
Purple rain forever. Well written, even with purple tears in your eyes LOL Yes, amazing talent. Inspirational, for sure!
Cheers P

I guess his age adds a lot to the shock and since I'm a musician that doesn't feel all that old and certainly not at all DONE, it somehow hit me hard. I sing that damn Purple Rain song all the time and now he's gone and made that a tough task, yes? Well, we're still here. That's the cool part. Thanks for stopping by. A little smile doesn't hurt a bit. Thanks, mikey

Yes, I agree the age thing is scary. Only 57. Christ, I'm 48!

Yeah, me too. HAHAHAHA!!!!!

This is a very sad day and he will be greatly missed. For many years he was an inspiration to young musicians. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your lovely poem.

This is a good tribute to Prince. I like the way you incorporate his song in your mournful tears at the end of the poem. You describe a musician's journey well in the first part of the poem
The way you use space allows time for reflection on his life. I like the color scheme
Black for death and purple for his song.
Keep writing.

I anticipate there will be a lot of valedictory writing on the subject of Prince. It is clear that he was a genius in his own field, which for one who became a legend in what is generally known as 'popular music' actually extended way beyond its normal bounds and well into the realms of what might be considered 'unpopular music'.
I understand he was a skilled on a wide range of instruments as well. Your poem does him more than justice.

He had a lot of influence on me as a musician and I'm sure his age added to the impact. I've not given in to the notion I'm old yet. HAHAHA! So anyone younger than me dying just doesn't mesh with my view of things very well. Pleased you found this to your liking. I wrote this right off the top of my head moments after hearing the news. I'd have to say, he inspired it and deserves the credit if it's worthy. mikey
