I came specifically to read the winning entry. I can relate to not wanting to give a speech. I have struggled with stage fright and couldn't finish my piano exams because of it. I was coming to terms with playing in front of small recitals and music festivals, but exams were my doom. I'm glad you were able to give a speech for your son. You have good things to say. Your voice should be heard more.

Bananafish I think you deserve to get a 12 for this essay. And I agree with you if there were more people in the world like this Kidney donor if that type of compassion or to overtake the world. The World Won't Be far much in a better place or state because love would dominate. Thank you for sharing

I spent 13 years as a qualified nurse. I totally agree with you Compassion is a quality which needs to be seen more often. As the world becomes more Godless, the compassion reduces in the world. I felt compelled to say I agreed and I wish you well in this contest.

There is a quote, attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, which states, "The greatest sophistication is simplicity." I also learned that lesson as an undergraduate in an English course. We were to analyze a story. The professor gave me a "C". During class we analyzed the story, and I realized that I had covered every point correctly. When I asked the professor why I got a "C". He said, "Because you are not writing like you." So, why am I telling you all this? Because you have told a wonderful story to match your admirable philosophy in simple, yet sophisticated style. What a terrific message here and the world certainly needs more of it. In our secular world we seem to be ignoring the messages that go to make up harmony in our society. What a perfect way for the son to celebrate entry into manhood.

There's a lot of evidence to suggest that Ghandi was a wife-beater and a racist. Likewise a lot of money seemed to go missing from Mother Teresa's organisation and she pushed the Catholicism a lot too...

I have heard about the accusations of racism against Gandhi, but I wasn't aware that he was also accused of wife-beating. I also wasn't aware of Mother Teresa's finacial improprieties, but I did know that there have been suggestions of other less than saintly things about her. I also know that she went through prolonged periods in which she had serious and traumatic doubts about her Catholicism and God.
We are such a flawed species, aren't we, that even the seemingly most virtuous among us turn out to be seriously flawed individuals?
