How to Get More From the Books You Read36 total reviews

First things first: Oh my gosh, thanks for the Peggy Lee song! (My dad's favorite ~ both the song and the woman.)
Secondly, I feel like I've been sitting with a Cadillac in my driveway for going on seven years and someone has just NOW told me the darn thing has more than one gear...and power steering...and WiFi...and, well you get the point.
I am the LEAST savvy techy person on this side of Jupiter. Still, I read this with awe and a tiny bit of "Holy Cow" thrown in.
I'm ashamed to say what I can't do on my regular Kindle...and who knew you could download it to your PC?
Well--smart folks, like you, that's who!
This is going into my Fs bookcase immediately (you really ought to get a little commission when we do that, btw)
I'm no fool (well that's arguable)--so I'll wait until my 19 year old granddaughter is available and have her walk me through the steps.
(Note: Most humans would have no problem...did I mention I am not tech-savvy?)
I'm stunned.
I am psyched!
Thanks...

You are so funny, and so stunningly apt, Karenina. Just love you to pieces! It would be bad, though, for you to get the impression that I am tech-savvy. It's the furthest thing from the truth. I just found, through experimentation, something that works for me. I'm thrilled you are going to get it to work for you, as well! You're gonna love it!

OH well there ya go, Jay. Can you make house calls? I'm only... Oh well...seems like we're not exactly around the corner from one another.
Back to plan A-- grandchild savvy it will be!

Let me know how it all turns out.

Thanks for this article. I have both a Kindle Fire and Kindle for PC, although I seldom use the latter. I find it easier to read the Fire and my chair in my nook where I write is not that comfortable. However, having read your tutorial, I will take a second look at the Kindle for PC. I appreciate the information. Stay well.

Thank you, Sir, for your validation. I think you'll want to use it, primarily for your deeper-dive studies, where you'll want to compare and contrast, and also to review it later as an aid to memory.

You're very welcome.

Good afternoon, my friend. (12.10 BST in London)
First of all, my cat, Charlie, warmly greets Scroedinger's Cat, now apparently living with you. (Quantum superposition paradox - hope you've read that by now.)
And that is 'not all': As a Kindle user of many years, (though on a Mac) I think this is the best guide I ever read (I'm book-casing it next) - clear as crystal, even though so complex by nature. Your grasp of the essentials and the way you give advice so precisely and accurately will surely be of enormous help to beginners and old hands alike.
You rightly say that the 'notes' are a goldmine - hats off to the programmers - its massive!
The understanding of 1) intention 2) consistency 3) flexibility are really the foundations of the whole thing - and you bring that out clearly.
Might be a teeny grammar tweak needed? If you look at the para headed 'Be flexible', you have a clause in there: ' . . . different set of criteria as to what is highlightable . .' and I think you might substitute the single word 'from' for 'what is' - unless you're using an American expression, about which I know nothing - or as you would say, 'nada!'
Congratulations on this magnum opus.
Best wishes, Paul

My hat is off to you, Paul, for your suggestions, the second of which has already been changed. As to the clause in that paragraph, I'm afraid you've left me stymied. From the beginning, I've read and reread that sentence, feeling that it was a tad awkward. Perhaps making the modification you allude to might correct that ... if only I knew what you referred to. I tend to toss a bunch or two of clauses in my 'salad', intending to enhance its flavor.
As to Scroedinger's Cat, I've opened the box and unleashed my dog. He is either chasing him up a tree or he's chasing the tree down her. He knows better than to approach Charlie, who might step on him.
Thank you so much, my friend, for reading this. I hope you continue to reap benefits from it.
-
Change ' . . . different set of criteria as to what is highlightable' into 'different set of criteria FROM what is highlightable . .' in the para headed BE FLEXIBLE - then it's grammatically correct.
The trouble with Schroedinger's cat is that in theory he is up the tree and not up the tree at the same time - so you need a quantum dog to chase him.
Got to book-case that now.
best, Paul

That's interesting. I changed it to "for" instead of "from". I'll have to look at it again. There is a different dynamic, albeit almost indiscernible, based on choosing one over the other. Still, your original suggestion is gold, Paul!
-
Should read 'different from' - if I said anything else, this tea is stronger than I thought!
Gold is good. Need a lot more though.

This is a very comprehensive guide here to downloading and using kindle and I will definitely be considering this as I haven't so far had any experience with it. You sell it well, Jay. Many thanks, Debbie

You have included a lot of information and put a lot of work into this post. Since I just downloaded Kindle for PC to my computer, I also put the app on my phone and Chromebook. I will bookmark this so I have a continuous reference as I become familiar with Kindle. Thanks for a new toy. I will be purchasing The Trining, Book one.

Thank you, Dolly, for reading and finding value in my ideas. We have a lot of "old-fashioned" folks on this site, and that's cool.

Jay, you've offered one of the single best suggestions there is to make us better readers. I used to read at least a book a week, sometimes, two, and on occasion I've read three. But with the average person only retaining 10% of what they read, I found that by the end of the week I'd retained nearly zilch. Now days, I read more some days than others, but books are stretched out over a couple weeks or so. I now take time to learn the words I don't know, highlight the outstanding sentences, and list the ideas my reading brings to my attention. Thanks for sharing.

You know what you need to do, and you're doing it! What I love most about my KoPC is having a word's meaning one highlight away from being known. And since part of my strategy is having Dictionary.com open to the screen that allows me to work with learned words. I first list the new one and it becomes included among the words they drill me on regularly. So new words don't just get "lost" in this warehouse I call my mind. Go for it, and thanks, my friend, for reading my post.

It's always a pleasure to read anything you write. But most of all, it's nice to know that such a talented writer and wordsmith hasn't forgotten us in the earlier stages of learning. Thanks!

This is in-depth information for the technologically unsavvy people on this site. I speak entirely for myself! Lol.
I'm going to bookcase this and save it for when I download your books. I'm a terrible procrastinator. Yeah, it's my only sickness! Haha Great info, Jay. Best, JohnC

Thank you, John. Seriously, my friend ... try to get a handle on your procrastination. It's a killer, and the lukewarm satisfaction that we all receive by living in the "someday I'll's", is so much sadder when we look back on "what might have been" at my age.

Thanks so much, Jay! You put a lot of work into this. Loved how you included pictures all through. I prefer to read my Kindle whenever I don't have internet - like on an airplane ride. So that's when I read our fellow Fanstorians books on Kindle. But for other reading outside of FS, and not the Bible itself, I rather read with my hubby and we listen to books via Audible. But your post is fabulous!!

Thank you, Helen. You know, your closeness to your beloved is heartwarming. Reading with someone, sharing on that level of intimacy -- wow! that is amazing.

Thank you, Jay. I know we're blessed that we like the same things and even worked at the same companies so we do a lot together. That keeps us close.

Hi Jay! Ok, I don't have a kindle and don't plan on getting one, but for some reason I found your post fascinating. I have self taught myself everything since I got my first computer about 40 years ago. I said I don't plan on getting a Kindle but that doesn't mean I wouldn't buy and download that app you were talking about. However, right now I am using iPads to do my writing and I was wondering if there is an app for iPads? I do have a computer, but I like my iPads better. I do also have some kind of reader, but mine is reading to me. Amazon audio, not at all the same but has been necessary till surgery on eyes.
As my eyes start to get stronger I want that old fashion luxury again. And I love the idea of all the features and settings. After all my favorite place to tinker is in settings. Not in some arcade but I play best when I am teaching myself where I can just know whatever color code I pick for just the right feature. So this was a fun read for me. Thanks for sharing. I may bookcase this till I find out the answer to whether there is a Kindle app.

Hi, Debi, and thanks for reading. I did a Google search for iPad for Kindle. Check this link: https://tinyurl.com/5yacrcku It definitely says you can get a free app for your iPad. Now whether it will do all that the Kindle for PC will do, I can't say, but it's worth a shot, right?
In the meantime, thank you for reading. BTW, I hope you downloaded your free copy of my Novel. The window closes at Midnight (CA time) tonight. I'm anxious for everyone to read it. I do know you can download the kindle app on your iPhone.
Thank you so much for all your kindness.

Hi Jay, I am just seeing this now, so I would imagine that means I am a little late for your novel. And since we are just two days away from a week long vacation in beautiful northern MN, that would be a dream to look forward to. I will buy it if I have to once I find out about getting the kindle on iPad.
Thanks again Jay. I love your way of thinking. Debi
