I almost don't want to find out what happens next, but the story of your life is so well told. You are right in saying that we can often sense something's about to happen to us, that line really chilled me. I'm glad that you did have a friendship with Mrs D and her children and I could feel the warmth that was there. Another excellent piece, Lea.

An excellent, contemplative chapter here, Lea, as you assess the effects of abuse and their counter implications, sometimes, for resilience and vigilance on the part of the abused. l remember everything, too. I have a photographic memory. So I was a top student and got into the best college in China. But I had tones of trouble in college when I realized my life at home was so much more different than others. That was 40 years ago. I have been lucky with my own life. Coming here helped but it was hard at the beginning.
I liked that you used your scar to shut Mrs. D up. I wonder who was weeping, Mrs. D?

I'm not surprised you two bonded despite the language barrier. Abuse is a universal language...and the universal bonder of souls.
Great job piquing our curiosity about what will happen when the ogre returns. Ugh. Terrifying...and yet, I can't wait to read it.
