What a beautiful expression oflove in action, silently and unobtrusively.Grandfather despite his 'shivering bones' and 'calloused hands' repeated this unnoticed act of love of warming the house 'day in and day out'. One can almost sense the warmth created by Grandpa's actions in 'hot tea, toast and jam'. What a gem of wisdom at the end, in Grandpa's simple repetitive act was hidden' a wealth of unspoken love'.

I'm 86 years old and I remember my parents getting up to put wood in old wood stove and get it warmed up before they got us up and momma would have wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. Great piece. God loves you and I do too.

Yes love is like this .love is not puffed up it does not boast it does not seek its own... That's why it takes time for us to realize we are loved. One person like your Grandfather does things another says things another buys things,.my way to show is by hugs ..but I know thisIT IS THE GREATEST FORCE IN THE WORLD?.thanks for exploring it this way. I loved it
God bless

A heartwarming well written free verse. The message is
presented crystal clear. This theme is universal and
many can relate to it.
A very worthy contest entry.

How were we to know what's taken years to
comprehend? How love comes in oh so many
shapes and sizes; how even in this, Grandfather's
ritual, was hidden a wealth of unspoken love?

It happens more often than not but not so much today. Things just were expected to be the way they were supposed to be.

Very nice, sweet tribute to a strong, capable person. Often I think we don't appreciate the ones we love until they're gone. This poem reads so well and tells a poignant story. Enjoyed and it's very well done.

I believe that author notes are not allowed in this one. Just mentioning so you won't break these particular rules.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I have to give you a 6 for this wonderful telling of a piece of your family history. I sincerely believe that you have a natural voice for story telling. Your unsentimental way of putting your story down and the unapologetic way you tell of all the years it took to realize what your Grandfather did for your family is just so good. You should start a little book of all your memories. I will be waiting to read them.

Thank you for your lovely comments. Actually my youngest sister and I are in the process of writing a book of poems about memories of growing up in WV. There are some memories in my first book, Bad Red Shoes which is available on Amazon.

A very nice tribute to your Grandfather in your poem.

Grandfather's are great, they never judge, just love.

Nicely written, good luck in the poll.
